Speaking about Beer and Health: Debunking myths and discussing moderation

"Beer is one of the oldest and most beloved drinks in the world. It’s been part of our culture for thousands of years, and that’s why it’s no surprise that there are so many myths and misunderstandings about its health effects. Let us take a look at some of the most common myths about beer and how to enjoy it in moderation," says Avneet Singh, Founder, Medusa Beverages Pvt. Ltd who clarifies further in the myth surrounding it...!

Myth#1 Drinking beer before liquor will make you sicker.

It’s one of the most common misconceptions that drinking beer before drinking hard liquor will make you sick. In reality, the order in which you drink alcohol doesn’t have much of an impact on how your body metabolizes it. In fact, the sickness that’s often caused by mixing different kinds of alcohol has more to do with how much you drink and how often you drink it, rather than what order you drink it in. So, if you’re going to drink alcohol, it’s important to drink it in moderation and pace yourself.

Myth#2 Drinking too much beer causes “Beer Belly”

Fear of a “beer belly” has caused people to think that beer is the only thing that causes belly fat. But belly fat isn’t caused by beer, it’s caused by eating too many calories from all over. Yes, beer does have calories, and eating too many high calorie drinks can cause belly fat. But it’s not that you’re having a light beer that’s causing your belly to bulge. It’s the difference between how much you eat and how much you drink.

Myth#3 Light beer are the healthier choices

Promoted as a more health-conscious substitute for regular beers, light beers have contributed to the misconception that they are the superior choice. Despite typically having lower calorie content, it is delusional to assume they are inherently better for all health-conscious individuals. It is crucial to take into account factors beyond caloric intake, including individual taste inclinations and nutritional composition. Furthermore, certain studies propose that individuals might unconsciously consume larger quantities of light beer to offset the reduced calorie load, essentially ignoring the intended advantages.

Myth#4 Bottled beer is better than canned

The debate between bottled beer and canned beer has given rise to another persistent myth. While some argue that bottled beer is superior in taste and quality, and others believe canned beer is more environmentally friendly, the truth is that both packaging methods have their pros and cons. Modern canning technology has improved significantly, ensuring that canned beer maintains its flavor and quality. The choice between bottled and canned beer is often a matter of personal preference rather than a clear health or taste advantage.

Myth#5 All beers should be served cold

The idea that all beers should be served ice-cold is a myth that can affect the enjoyment of various beer styles. While it's true that certain lighter and milder beers are traditionally served colder, many craft beers, ales, and stouts benefit from slightly warmer temperatures. Extreme cold can dull the flavors and aromas of these beers, limiting the depth of the tasting experience. Knowing the appropriate serving temperature for different beer styles can enhance your enjoyment and appreciation of their unique characteristics.

Amidst the myths and misconceptions, the crucial concept of moderation should not be overlooked. Beer, like any alcoholic beverage, can be enjoyed responsibly and even offer certain health benefits when consumed in moderation. Moderate beer consumption has been linked to potential cardiovascular benefits, as well as the social and psychological advantages of enjoying a beverage in a social setting.

In conclusion, separating fact from fiction is essential when discussing beer and health. While myths like the order of consumption or the source of a beer belly have persisted, it's clear that moderation is the key to responsibly enjoying beer.

More Women are investing in Equity Funds, save more than men for investments

A recent survey showed 42% Surge in Women Investors in 2023 with 87% of them preferring Equity Funds, and the interesting aspect is that Women Save 5% More for Future Goals than Men...

Another trend is that Women's goal-based SIP investments show an impressive 19% lower stoppage rate, reflecting their long-term commitment to financial goals

An in-depth study among 3,763 women clients from the age bracket of 23 to 76 years in August 2023 on the occasion of Women’s Equality Day was carried out by a private investment management company FinEdge.

The study unveiled a remarkable 42% rise in women investors, saving 5% more for future goals than men. Notably, 30.82% of women prioritize retirement planning, signalling a major trend shift. Women also showed resilience in goal-based SIP investments, with a 19% lower stoppage rate, emphasizing their commitment to long-term financial goals."

Harsh Gahlaut, CEO, FinEdge said "We are delighted to see more and more women leading the way and helming their family's financial plan. Temperamentally, women make better investors than men as they are less speculative, and more purpose driven. This makes them excellent long-term investors as their resilience allows them to benefit from compounding. We are certain that this trend will gather momentum in the next 3-5 years”.

In regional breakdown, the West and North zones had strong female investor percentages at 34.54% and 32.98%, respectively. However, the East zone lagged with only 7.54% women investors."

Women have distinct financial challenges, requiring a unique investment approach

The study also aimed to uncover some of the key challenges mentioned below that women investors face on their wealth creation journey:

Career breaks for family care

Excessive risk aversion affecting returns

Distrust in sales-focused advisors

Limited awareness of key investing concepts

Confidence gaps due to traditional gender roles

More and more women are focusing on their own retirement

Retirement planning is gaining traction among women. A notable 30.82% prioritize it, second only to child education planning at 32.82%. This shift marks a new era where women independently plan for retirement or contribute equally to joint plans, ensuring financial resilience in unforeseen life events.

"Without a doubt, the increasing number of women who are entering the work force and excelling at their careers is driving the trend towards increased financial independence", said Gahlaut.

When guided properly, women embrace measured risk taking and benefit from compounding

Another interesting inference was that 87% of women opt for equity-oriented SIP investments, slightly below men at 89.9%. This This statistic is a clear indicator that the new generation of women investors are no longer shackled by their innate risk aversion. The average age of women investors was found to be 38.67 years, which was around 2 years less than the average age for male investors, which came in at 40.34 years.

Women are investing more than men for their goals, with clear and holistic goal-based plans

On average, women have 3.47 financial goals, while men have 3.74, showcasing a holistic approach. Women invest an average of Rs. 14,347 monthly, slightly higher than men at Rs. 13,704, challenging traditional assumptions. Notably, women show a 5% higher monthly savings rate for future goals. Additionally, women's SIP investments have a 19% lower stoppage rate, affirming their resilience as long-term investors."

Women’s investment management needs are unique, differ from those of men

FinEdge also conducted detailed feedback sessions with their investment experts who manage investments for women clients, to glean qualitative insights on what women look for in their investing platforms. The following factors topped the list:

Survey Methodology

The survey was conducted by FinEdge in the month of August this year. The sample is comprised of 3,763 women clients of FinEdge from the age bracket of 23 to 76 years. The study includes clients from across the region ranging from the West, East, North and South.

Students, Artisans spin a Vibrant Tale of India’s Weaves, aiming to take Indian handloom to Wider markets

NIFT students pan-India work with Indian artisans across 75 handloom clusters as part of the Cluster initiative and collaborate with Odisha Ikat artisans and weavers to take handloom to more audiences

In a celebration that intertwines art, culture, and history, the Ministry of Textiles is honouring traditional handloom artisans as part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav — a celebration of India’s 75 years of Independence. The occasion serves as evidence of the government’s dedication to safeguarding and strengthening the rich tradition of handloom workmanship in the country. As part of the effort, National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) students are working with artisans and weavers in 75 clusters across India to exchange knowledge and ideas to take Indian handloom to a wider audience...

India’s handlooms in recent years have taken the global stage. We’ve seen global dignitaries adorning our traditional looms during the recently organised G20 Summit. It is the art that we must cherish, preserve and promote as much as possible. As proud Indians it is our responsibility to bring our artisans on a global platform, where in they can share their love and passion for the artform with millions of other people globally. NIFT’s cluster initiative allows master craftsmen and weavers to pass on their art to future designers and handloom enthusiasts, while allowing them to imbibe newer ideas and modern ways from the students.

“India’s handlooms have gracefully taken centre stage on the global platform, a testament to their timeless artistry and cultural significance. As proud Indians, we embrace the responsibility to elevate our artisans to a worldwide audience, allowing them to share their profound love and passion for this art form with millions across the globe. With steadfast government support, we strive to empower these skilled craftsmen, securing their livelihoods and weaving a vibrant tapestry of cultural pride that resonates far beyond our borders. The government’s robust initiatives provide financial assistance, skill development, and enhanced market access, bolstering the growth of this treasured industry. Together, we weave a brighter future, preserving our rich cultural legacy for generations to come,” stated Smt. Darshana V. Jardosh, Honourable Minister of State, Textiles, Government of India.

The community, which has a population of 4,264 people and is surrounded by mountains and green fields, employs 1,000 to 2,000 craftspeople of any gender or age. Festivals like Dussehra, Lakshmi Puja, Savitri Puja, and New Year (on Hanuman Jayanti) hold special significance for the village, as the residents come together adorned in new and traditional clothes, often purchasing at least one piece of the exquisite Ikat craft.

“Being a part of the Ikat Cluster has been transformative,” shared Garima Vij, 3 rd Year, NIFT New Delhi student. & “Collaborating with skilled artisans, we have witnessed the enchanting process of setting weft yarns, tying intricate designs, and experiencing the artistry of dyeing.

It is a mesmerising journey, and I am inspired to preserve India’s rich handloom legacy. The Ministry of Textiles, in collaboration with NIFT, recognised the immense talent and potential of the NIFT students in contributing to further strengthening India’s handloom legacy. As a part of their cluster initiative programme, NIFT students engaged with the local artisans in the Single Ikat Cluster. Smart Video Surveillance HDDs imperative for CCTV 's Crystal Clear Videos, Consolidated footage

Industry sources estimate that the video surveillance market is projected to grow from USD 48.7 billion in 2022 to USD 76.4 billion by 2027. Not a dream but quite achievable as the new cutting-edge technology and innovative solutions continue to drive the growth of the smart video CCTV industry. Read on...

The market demand clearly shows a surge in the deployment of CCTVs across verticals and industries to improve the way we live and work. Today, best practices and guidelines are available to help industries like retail, manufacturing, smart cities, and more implement CCTV to effectively manage and control their operations. CCTV systems capture and record video footage continuously, which can quickly lead to large amounts of data being generated.

As a result, it is important to use a CCTV or smart video-grade storage solution instead of standard hard disk drives (HDDs) for 24/7 monitoring. A smart video surveillance HDD, specifically designed to handle multiple streams and the demand of continuous recording provides reliable and consistent performance for the demands of a CCTV system.

Here's why smart video surveillance HDDs are needed for CCTV usage, discusses Jaganathan Chelliah, Senior Director - Marketing, India & Middle East and Africa, Western Digital:

24x7 monitoring: Surveillance HDDs are designed to run continuously, helping ensure that the videos are consistently recorded 24/7. This can help improve operational efficiency by capturing video footage round the clock, as these HDDs allow for real-time issue detection. Any anomalies, malfunctions, or deviations from standard operating procedures can be immediately identified, triggering alerts or notifications. Surveillance HDDs such as WD PurpleTM Pro feature a workload rating of up to 180TB/year – up to three times that of desktop drives, specifically designed to operate in surveillance systems, where the need is to continuously record and store large amounts of video data.

Crystal clear video: Due to their fast-writing speeds, smart video surveillance HDDs allow for quick capture of multiple streams and high-capacity storage of very high-quality video. The WD Purple HDDs also feature AllFrameTM technology so CCTV cameras can record videos with less frame loss and produce high-quality, sharp-edged 4K videos, compared to videos stored on PC drives.

Ability to process heavy workloads: Smart video surveillance HDDs are intended for 24x7 storage workloads, as they function on a 90-10 ratio– 90% storage and 10% of review and replay data. Smart video surveillance HDDs are optimized for scalability, enabling the addition of more cameras to the system. For instance, some surveillance HDDs like WD Purple drives can support up to 64 single-stream HD cameras (6TB and beyond), as well as many of the most recent cameras that send multiple streams to provide basic AI capability.

Additionally, certain Western Digital drives like WD Purple Surveillance HDD (up to 10TB) are engineered for mainstream surveillance DVRs and NVRs that operate 24/7 and are able to process heavy workloads as they have a mean time between failures (MTBF) of up to 1 million hours.

Sustainable solution: Smart video surveillance HDDs consume less power than traditional HDDs or general-purpose computer drives because of their low-power profiles. This helps in producing less heat, which results in cooler overall operating temperatures. Even while working 24x7x365, these HDDs can function smoothly without breaking down.

Consolidated footage: Smart video surveillance HDDs offer a decent amount of storage – up to 22TB4. The 22TB4 WD Purple Pro HDDs can be used to consolidate footage from multiple cameras into a central video server or storage system, which makes it easier to manage and analyze the data. For instance, surveillance HDDs such as the WD Purple Pro comes equipped with field-proven OptiNANDTM technology that delivers trusted high-capacity performance and offers storage of up to 22TB1 for the massive storage needs of AI-driven smart video and deep learning analytics.

Overall, smart video surveillance HDDs are important for CCTV systems that record continuously and require better reliability, durability, and storage capacity for 24/7 streaming. Specialised storage solutions can help handle high workloads, retain data for long periods, and consume less power, making the most out of a CCTV system.

Kamath, Chairman of National Bank for Financing Infrastructure and Development (NaBFID), Sudhir Hoshing, Chair, PHDCCI Infrastructure Development Ports, Shipping, Roads and Waterways Committee, as well as Himanshu Agarwal, Co-Chair, PHDCCI Infrastructure Development, Ports, Shipping, Roads and Waterways Committee.

“In any planning process, two critical factors come into play: aspiration and ability. It is essential to assess Maharashtra's ambition of achieving a $1 trillion economy by examining the recent developments in India's economic landscape and the momentum gained. We must question whether the target of one trillion is the right goal and how long it will take to achieve it. While aiming high is commendable, we should also consider reaching for higher milestones. However, we must be realistic and assess whether we have the capability to meet such aspirations. Some years ago, reaching half a trillion seemed unattainable, but now, given our current trajectory, reaching five trillion in a specific timeframe becomes a possibility,” said K. V. Kamath, Chairman of National Bank for Financing Infrastructure and Development (NaBFID).

He added: “The cleanup of balance sheets for both banks and corporate India in the last 2-3 years has been unprecedented, something I have not seen in the past 50 years of my career. Corporate India is willing to borrow, and banks are willing to lend. Given the optimism arising from clean balance sheets, the next consideration is setting growth targets. Maharashtra's growth rate of 9 percent indicates a doubling in about eight years, which suggests reaching a trillion within 7-8 years. This growth trajectory aligns with the focus on rail connectivity, green power, and urban rejuvenation, which presents a significant opportunity for transformation. The rejuvenation of our cities, including redevelopment, improved infrastructure, roads, housing colonies, and beautification, are crucial building blocks in driving the growth momentum. These endeavours contribute to GDP acceleration and create ample investment opportunities. Maharashtra has the ability, capability, and opportunity to pave the way for a promising future.”

“As we gather here today, we are witnessing unprecedented changes in the world. The need for innovative solutions has never been more urgent, and green infrastructure emerges as a beacon of hope. It envisions cities as vibrant ecosystems with clean air, water, and the well-being of our communities at the core. The choices we make now in terms of infrastructure will echo for generations to come, so this conference serves as a platform for action, not just knowledge dissemination,” said Sudhir Hoshing, Chair, PHDCCI Infrastructure Development Ports, Shipping, Roads and Waterways Committee.

The event also witnessed the unveiling of the PHDCCI – Cushman & Wakefield Knowledge Report, offering valuable insights into Maharashtra's green initiatives. As Maharashtra charts its path towards a remarkable $1 trillion SGDP, this conclave serves as an essential platform to drive the state's ambitious vision through sustainable and eco-conscious practices.

The report extensively examines Maharashtra's green initiatives and highlights the state's proactive efforts to promote clean energy, ensuring affordability, reliability, sustainability, and modernisation. According to the Economic Survey of Maharashtra, the installed capacity of renewable energy in the state saw a significant 9 percent increase in 2022-23 compared to the previous financial year. As a result, Maharashtra now ranks fifth in the country with a total capacity of 11,400 MW, which includes an impressive 3,352 MW of solar energy. Notably, during the World Economic Forum's 53rd annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland, Maharashtra signed 19 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) across diverse sectors such as hi-tech and infrastructure, energy, IT/fintech/data centers, steel manufacturing, agro, and food processing. These MoUs have the potential to attract investments worth INR 1.37 trillion and create over one lakh employment opportunities. Notably, a significant portion of these investments, amounting to INR 460 billion, were allocated to the renewable energy and electric vehicle sectors, further reinforcing Maharashtra's commitment to a sustainable and green future.

Mr. Manick Wadhwa, Director, SKI Capital Services and Founder Chairman, ABANS group were the other speakers at this conclave that featured three engaging panel discussions covering topics such as Sustainable Construction, Green Infrastructure Financing, and Harnessing Growth through SEZs.

Alleviating Separation Anxiety and Fussy Eating: Comprehensive Solutions for Pet Parents

A free-for-all open house helped owners to address behavioral challenges in their pets

Bangalore, 02 August 2023:
Wag-Ville, a Bangalore-based premier pet care facility, hosted “Let’s Talk Dog- Open House” on Sunday, July 30, 2023. The free-of-cost canine Open House was held at the Wag-Ville facility in Jakkur and was attended by several pet parents to address the behavioral issues of their pet dogs. Read on...

The event addressed several canine behavioral issues including bonding, separation anxiety, biting, aggression, fussy eating, howling etc.

“It is never too late to train a dog. Dogs have inborn curiosity. So, pet parents should use this curiosity to train them subtly. Pet parents are always anxious about whether their training tactics are having a positive impact on their pets or if is it leading to other behavioral issues. Many pet parents face the issues of separation anxiety or aggressive attention-seeking behavior where they do not know how to handle the situation. Correct guidance and training by professionals can help build a stronger bond between the pet and its parent. At Wag-Ville, our experienced professionals always try to understand the root cause of the issue to help the pet parents overcome their problems and strengthen their bond,” said Subhadra Cherukuri, Founder, Wag-Ville.

Addressing some of the key issues brought up by the pet parents, the professional trainers at Wag-Ville individually discussed each problem giving scientifically proven training methods to address them. “Separation anxiety is one of the most common issues that pet parents face. Separation anxiety should not be mistaken for bonding. Separation anxiety comes when the dog is constantly looking for comfort from their owners. For the dogs, their pet parent is the entire universe. Hence, while we are training our dogs, we should also give them ‘away time’ to build their independence. If it is important to give them your time and attention, it is also important to ignore them at times, so that they know when to expect pampering and when to fend on their own,” she added.

Wag-Ville delved into the various handy tips and advice that are used to imbibe discipline in pets. According to research, it takes 3000 consistent repetitions for a dog to learn the action associated with the sound.  In other words, while training a dog, one needs to repeat the same word and actions consistently for the pet to follow the command.

Taking about the importance of exercise for pets, the trainers said, “Every dog breed is genetically conditioned to work as a guide hunter or guard dog, etc. according to the purpose they were bred for. Now that these breeds are kept as ‘pet dogs’ they don’t have any work in an urban setup. Thus, there are two things that we need to keep in mind. When you take a dog as a pet, it is important that they are given an opportunity explore the world in a way they like. Secondly, we need to give them a certain amount of work and challenges in the form of sniffing activities, play fetch, etc.  for their mental and physical stimulation and maintain the overall health of your pet.”

Keeping pets in gated communities or residential apartments also has its share of issues where other residents are not comfortable around pet animals. Having a well-trained dog becomes very essential as pets not just become a part of a family but also a loved member in the community.

The trainers also conducted insightful demonstrations with dogs and their owners. Through these sessions, they provided valuable insights into understanding the dogs' behaviors and effectively addressed each issue, offering practical and tailored solutions to pet parents.

Taking about several cases of pet aggression and biting in public, Subhadra said, “Animals should not be feared but be raised as a part of society. For this, it is very important to reach out to a trainer who can assess the triggers of an animal and train them for their behavior. This work will involve some effort from the trainer and the dog owner,  but it is possible to make a change that can lead to a huge positive transition in pet behavior.”

Wag-Ville is a dedicated pet care facility aimed at strengthening the bond between pets and their owners. The company offers a wide range of professional and safe services to ensure the well-being of pets.

Wag-Ville hosts these Open House programs once a month, free of cost, and open to any dog owner to attend. Please follow them on Instagram @wagville_india for updates.

Parindey Storytellers win honours at the 12th Kolkata Shorts International Film Festival

Two short films ENTRAPMENT and RAJU;S CONFLICT directed by Gurgaon Based filmmakers, Parindey Storytellers, win big at the 12th Kolkata Shorts International Film Festival. Entrapment won the award for Best Background score while Raju’s Conflict won Honourable Jury Mention.

This is after they also won big at the 13th Dadasaheb Phalke International Film Festival 2023. The two short films were directed by Prakhar Gautam and produced under the banner of Parindey Storytellers...

Entrapment is the story of a lonely woman who lives in a concocted reality of a family she never had and an idea she has lived with for years to kill her loneliness. The story of the film was conceived by Harrdeep who also played the lead role in the film. The film was shot on a shoestring budget with a small crew and has already one other honours including the Best Editing award at the 10th Noida International Film Festival.

Hardeep who has acted in various TV shows and films said “The making of entrapment was a very emotional experience for me as the topic was very close to my heart. My father who left us two years ago due to covid was the inspiration for this story. The film is about loneliness and social entrapment that almost every woman faces at some time or the other. This feeling can get so overwhelming at times that the mind starts concocting things as a defense mechanism”.

Raju’s Conflict is set in pre-independent India and the film depicts the dilemma of Raju, a simpleton in a small village in pre-independent India. Raju is from a family of patriots who have sacrificed their lives for the country. His Brother was recently killed by the English rulers for being a Revolutionary. The dilemma he faces here is a choice between killing for an ideology or not killing for humanity…

Anmol Bhayana who played the role of Raju said “Had a fantastic time working on this film. We all went to a village to shoot this one and it was extremely cold. It has come out really well and everyone is liking it which makes us happy and grateful”

Sucheta who has also acted in many major ads said - The making of this movie reaffirmed my belief that if a story resonates strongly with your thoughts and ideals, you will put in all your effort to make it believable to others. Camera work, acting, editing, and all other aspects that make a film loveable fall into place. That has been my personal learning from working with this film.

About Prakhar, Anil, another actor said - His vision as a director and his interest as a historian seeing those two aspects come alive into the camera and on the screen.

Ayush an actor in the film said Raju's Conflict talks about the different conflicts we have in our personal life. It was a fabulous life experience, acting in the movie and learning new perspectives about the shoot

Jashan who was also an associate director in the film said - I feel lucky to have worked with Parindey both in front of and behind the camera. Entrapment and Raju's Conflict are two starkly different films but the one thing that is common between the projects is the effort put in by Prakhar and his team that has brought about phenomenal success.

It was a great experience working in Raju's conflict with Prakhar's team as we share one vision whenever we do something we always try to provide something new to the audience and more importantly to you yourself also. As for my character Zamindar, it's a layered one that I thoroughly enjoyed playing with the help of Prakhar and which I have not done before also. Felt blessed to be part of such a project and team thankyou and keep rocking said Sarat Bothra.

Miyawaki plantation adopted by Vedanta Aluminium towards nature conservation

Observing World Nature Conservation Day on July 28, Vedanta Aluminium commenced extensive afforestation efforts, based on the unique Miyawaki method, for the first time ever in the vicinity of its Jamkhani coal mines in Sundargarh district, Odisha.  Following this up on International Tiger Day (July 29) with widespread awareness efforts among community members on the crucial need to conserve the magnificent feline, Vedanta Aluminium is deploying comprehensive efforts to raise awareness and intensify actions around nature conservation. The company is spurring collective community action across its operations to enhance its efforts towards conserve natural ecosystems.

Pioneered by noted Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki, the Miyawaki method of tree plantation is an effective way to create dense, multilayered plantations using native species within a very short span. Commencing the initiative on 1 acre of land on the periphery of its Jamkhani coal mines, the company intends to quickly scale this up to cover over 61 hectares of land within just two years’ time. The resultant plantation will be self-sustaining in nature with an estimated 12,50,000 plants, including several fruit-bearing species.

In addition, on the occasion of International Tiger Day recently, employee volunteers at Vedanta Aluminium’s units across Odisha, Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh conducted engaging awareness sessions in multiple schools in the vicinity of their operational locations. They focused on educating young minds about the importance of preserving tigers, which are an important keystone species that help preserve several other species, thereby conserving entire ecosystems. The awareness sessions were also undertaken for community members at several Nand Ghars, which are modernized anganwadis supported by Vedanta that act as free hubs of women and child development.

On the occasion, Mr. Sunil Gupta, COO, Vedanta Limited - Aluminium Business commented, "At Vedanta Aluminium, we wholeheartedly embrace nature conservation as a fundamental of sustainable business practices. We proudly call ourselves ‘green hearts’ as we pursue impactful initiatives to conserve and foster thriving natural ecosystems while simultaneously sensitizing communities about the best practices for the same. With unwavering dedication, we strive to pioneer eco-conscious approaches that safeguard our planet for the legacy of generations to come."

Adding his views, Mr V. Srikanth, CEO (Mines), Vedanta Ltd - Aluminium Business said, “Preserving nature is not just an environmental imperative; it's also a crucial, shared obligation and a strategic interest for both businesses and society. As joint stewards of this planet, we are consistently focusing on embracing sustainable practices and championing conservation efforts. This will help build a thriving future that respects and protects the precious resources nature has to offer.”

Vedanta Aluminium is establishing scientific targets towards resource efficiencies and conservation, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable development. The company undertakes its environmental stewardship efforts aligned with the philosophy of ‘Lifestyle for Environment - LiFE’ a Government of India initiative and the UN Sustainable Development Goals 14 & 15 focusing on conserving biodiversity and natural ecosystems.

The company’s mega aluminium smelter at Jharsuguda, world-class alumina refinery in Lanjigarh, iconic subsidiary BALCO at Korba, Chhattisgarh and its extensive mining and port operations are also spurring collective community action to conserve nature. Recently, the company established a lush new Butterfly Park within its premises at Jharsuguda, featuring over 100 meticulously curated selections of plant species that will attract and nurture more than 30 rare and exquisite butterfly species providing them with a nurturing habitat.

Vedanta Aluminium consistently organises mega plantation drives, while actively engaging employee volunteers and local communities in extensive city clean-up efforts across its operations. Furthermore, the company has also deployed electric vehicles for on-site travel alongside organising awareness rallies and online workshops aimed at fostering informed, sustainable lifestyle choices to conserve and foster nature. The company undertook the restoration of over 40 waterbodies around its business units to rejuvenate the aquatic life and support the livelihoods of the local communities.

The company has embarked on an extensive range of natural conservation projects across its business units, achieving several milestones in the journey:

Planted around 2.5 lakh saplings in FY23 towards enhancing community access to green cover

Recycled 13.69 billion litres of water in FY23, in the journey towards water-positive operations

Partnered with global environment conservation firm ERM, to bolster the company’s biodiversity management plan

Conservation awareness talks for employees, their families and community members, led by notable conservationists such as Ramveer Tanwar (Pond Man of India) and Rakesh Khatri (Nest Man of India)

Planting saplings of Chloroxylon Swietenia, commonly known as Ceylon satinwood, to help conserve the vulnerable species

Substantial contributions to the conservation of Schedule 1 species, such as through community awareness session on the need to protect the yellow monitor lizard species.

Training women under the Vedanta Sakhi project in beekeeping and honey production as a remunerative avenue for livelihood

Installation of birdhouses and nests in the company’s residential townships to support bird conservation at and around operations. Watering stations were installed across peripheral areas to provide hydration for birds and animals during hot weathe
