India’s Leadership to End Cosmetics Animal Testing Lauded at 9th World Congress on Alternatives in Prague

#BeCrueltyFree India team join global delegates

PRAGUE (28 August 2014) – India’s major achievement in banning animal testing for cosmetics, as well as its potential to replace more animal use in medical research and testing, was highlighted at this year’s 9th World Congress on Alternatives and Animal Use in the Life Sciences. Humane Society International’s #BeCrueltyFree campaign to end animal testing of cosmetics brought together a delegation of policy experts and regulators from across the globe, including campaign manager Alokparna Sengupta from Hyderabad and A.K. Pradhan, Deputy Drugs Controller for the Indian government.

The World Congress is the premier global event for scientists, policy experts, regulators, companies and animal advocates to join in dialogue about reducing and replacing animals in research and testing. Sengupta and Pradhan joined with #BeCrueltyFree experts coming from Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Europe, Korea and the United States, as well as regulators from Brazil, Russia, India and Canada,  for “X-2: Cosmetics around the world,” a session dedicated to ending cosmetics testing on animals.

India’s success in banning animal testing of cosmetics, its progress toward banning the import of cosmetics animal tested abroad, as well as the government’s express interest in exploring other scientifically and economically advantageous opportunities to replace out-dated animal testing with state-of-the-art alternatives, was presented to the more than 1,000 delegates.

Sengupta said: “I am proud to represent HSI’s Be Cruelty-Free India campaign at such an event with some of the world’s top science and policy experts in the field of non-animal research. The Indian government made the landmark decision to ban cruel and out-dated animal testing for cosmetics following detailed negotiation with Be Cruelty-Free India and others. We are hopeful that an import ban on cosmetics tested on animals will follow shortly.

“We also are keen to see India take a leadership role in Asia in replacing animal use in other areas of testing and medical research. Indian citizens, our science base and economy stand to benefit from greater investment in modern science without animals. The World Congress has been an excellent opportunity for us to discuss further India’s potential to reduce the use of animals in testing pharmaceuticals, vaccines and medical devices.”
#BeCrueltyFree India is working with government regulatory agencies on policy reform, with scientists on the promotion of alternatives, and with other animal advocates to raise awareness about animal testing.

WHAT: Sachiin Joshi and Boman Irani promote Goa Nicofix-anti tobacco chewing gum
WHEN: 23rd Aug, 2014
WHERE: Lakme Fashion Week, The Palladium Hotel

On Saturday evening Sachiin Joshi along with actor Boman Irani promoted anti-smoking at Lakme Fashion Week. Sachiin Joshi pulled up his socks and sleeve as he introduced Goa Nicofix anti-tobacco chewing gum.
Goa Nicofix is a type of ‘Nicotine Replacement Therapy’ also helping to reduce nicotine cravings and is one of the products by Viiking Confectionaries, the CMD of which is actor Sachiin Joshi. It is also a cleaner way of taking nicotine as it is free from chemicals, tar and smoke. It keeps your breath fresh and does not stain your teeth.
Both Sachiin Joshi and Boman Irani present at the press conference to promote the product look dapper in suits! On his product Sachiin Joshi quoted, “Goa Nicofix is as discussed a nicotine replacement therapy for consumers who are smoking from a very long time and find it difficult to stop it.  One can even say that is a kind of a CSR activity that I wanted to initiate and associate myself with.
Sachiin adds, every human body has nicotine levels in already in them and the consumption of cigarettes adds to the levels which makes us lethargic and reduces our stamina. Goa NicoFix is a product which will help consumers to kick the butt! Smoking is the most difficult habit to cut down on and is much more difficult than alcoholism to give up according to statistics in India”
On his association with Goa Niofix and him being chosen as a brand ambassador actor Boman Irani says, “ Sachiin here has chosen one of the youngest actors in the industry as a brand ambassador! (jokes apart) But when we were in school/college smoking was considered “cool” and the one who didn’t smoke was of course very “uncool”. Rather obvious it increased the number of smokers at that time because of the peer pressure. But today’s generation is much smarter and careful about their health. Also the people from our generation have stopped smoking and have become conscious about their health, diet and fitness. Believe me when I say, smoking does a lot of damage to the body and the after effects are very bad.I personally think this is cooler way of kicking the butt as one may put it. It’s a wonderful cause and I am extremely happy to be a part of it”.
A media from the crowd pops up and says, we heard that you are going to play a Yamraj in the advertisement of Goa Nicofix! Tell us more!
Yes! Boman quoted, “an advertisement has also been shot where I play Yamraj who always cribs about not being able to go on a holiday since he has a lot of death pickups to take care of, owing to smoking and its ill-effects. I therefore request people to use Goa Nicofix which will help them give up smoking, so the Yamraj (which is me) can lead an easier and carefree life!
Here is wishing everyone a good and healthy life!
Goa Nicofix chabao, apni umar badao!

Raja Natwarlal - Movie Review

Rating: ***

Bollywood Movie Review - by PAWAN GUPTA

The movie begins with Raja (Emraan Hashmi) playing a street con The Three Card Monte to lure unsuspecting customers with Raghav (Dipak Tijori – old and obese) as his mentor and enhancer.

Raja spends the ill- gotten gains on a local street kid Robin Hood style or on his sweetheart bar-dancer Zia (Humaima Mullick- anaeroxic).

Everything is going fine until Raja decides to do a few big cons and retire and drags Raghav into it, they con Vardha Yadav’s goons (K.K. Menon-menacing) off rupees 80 lakhs. Raghav is promptly bumped off and search is on for his partner in crime.

Raja wants revenge of Raghav’s death and seeks help of a big con artist of yore Mr. Yogi (Paresh Raval-subdued) holed up in picturesque Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh, he takes Raja under his wings and an elaborate con is designed to finish off Vardha financially it also involves an auction for a CL T-20 team (Vardha loves anything cricket).

There is also a parallel track of two corrupt police officers trying to usurp the proceedings. It is any ones guess who out cons whom.

A good screenplay on a feeble storyline keeps you gripped in a few places. Natwarlal refers to the famed proverbial Indian con artist who sold parliament .

The focus of the movie is on Emraan Hashmi and he basks in its glory in his trademark matter of fact style others take a backseat.

Humaima makes a glamourous debut with three kissing scenes thrown in. How people will react to her new avatar in her country is to be seen.

COAI brings in ‘Expert Speak’ to dispel fears about health hazards from cell towers and phones

Experts in physics and medicine come together to allay health fears on the effects of mobile emissions

V.K.Cherian, Director COAI,  T.R. Dua, ED, TAIPA &  Dr. Mehool Mehta, Radiologist.jpg

India’s top brain-tumour specialist,    Dr. Rakesh Jalali, Professor,    Radiation Oncology and Convener, Neuro Oncology Group, Tata Medical Centre:“The RF waves used in the mobile phone technology are probably at the lowest end of the electromagnetic spectrum and does not cause any DNA kill.”

Professor Michael Repacholi, Chairman Emeritus of ICNIRP and Ex-EMF Project Co-Ordinator, WHO: “WHO fact sheet states very clearly that the mobile phones do not cause cancer. A number of studies conducted to ascertain relationship between the electromagnetic radiation and cancer have not found anything to indicate mobile radiation causing cancer.”

Pune, August 26, 2014: COAI, the apex body of mobile communications companies, has launched a public awareness campaign aimed at allaying health fears and dispelling myths surrounding mobile tower antennae and handsets. Titled “Mobile Networks and Public Health” series, this is the first time eminent experts from India and world over have come together on a common platform to dispel unwarranted fears of health hazards from mobile towers and handsets. The campaign comprises reference books and videos, and roadshows involving experts from oncology, radiology, molecular and physical science as well as the World Health Organisation (WHO).

The public awareness campaign, created by COAI, will run across several Indian cities, and is aimed to dispel the myths regarding effects of mobile emissions on public health. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) too had recognised the issue that a large section of Indian public harboured unwarranted fears that were not based on scientific data and facts. COAI’s campaign is along the same lines.

The booklet and video series will be widely circulated among the masses, decision makers, and will be circulated on social media.

Mr. Rajan S. Mathews, Director General, COAI, said: “Over the last 20 years, the mobile industry has been successful in putting India on the global map, making us the second largest telecom market in the world. This has also brought in concerns about the Electromagnetic Field with regards to Cell Towers and Handsets. COAI is happy to bring experts from the relevant disciplines such as Physics and Medicine on a common platform to dispel the fear psychosis created by some people who are oblivious of the science and safety regime behind the technology. The video and communication series ‘Mobile networks and Public Health’ will put forth the scientific and safety regime adopted by the Government and industry.”

The first part of the series “Mobile Networks and Public Health” features Professor R. V. Hosur - Senior Professor, Department of Chemical Sciences, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR); Dr. Rakesh Jalali - Professor, Radiation Oncology and Convener, Neuro Oncology Group, Tata Medical Centre; Professor Michael Repacholi - Chairman Emeritus of ICNIRP and Ex-EMF Project Co-Ordinator, World Health Organization; and Dr. Rajesh Dikshit - Department of Epidemiology, Urology (DMG), Tata Medical Centre. The series is introduced by Mr. Rajan S Mathews, Director General of COAI. A twelve minute video film captures the “science and safety regime” behind the mobile emissions.

India, like the rest of the world community, has recognized that mobile telecommunications contributes significantly to the speedy socio-economic development. But at the same time, myths regarding health issues due to mobile towers and mobile handsets have gained ground while the country is making rapid progress in the field of telecom services. Rigorous and independent scientific studies and researches across the globe led by the World Health Organization (WHO) have negated all fears of health effects from mobile tower antennae and phones.

Here is what the experts had to say on the topic:

Dr. Bhavin Jankharia, Mumbai based Radiologist and President of Indian Radiology & Imaging Association: “We have been using X-ray radiations for more than 115 years, and we still haven’t been able to establish the relationship of cancer and radiation to any great extent. The mobile tower radiation is inherently a type of radiation that we believe does not produce any kind of significant harm to humans.”

Professor R.V. Hosur, Senior Professor, Department of Chemical Sciences, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) said: “Ionising radiation causes damage to the molecules – they break the chemical bonds and can cause health hazards. But non-ionizing radiations (from mobile tower antennae and phones) do not cause the breakage of bonds and do not cause damage to the molecules. Non-ionizing radiation such as mobile emission causes only local change in temperature depending on the extent of use.”

India’s top brain-tumour specialist, Dr. Rakesh Jalali, Professor, Radiation Oncology and Convener, Neuro Oncology Group, Tata Medical Centre said: “The RF waves used in the mobile phone technology are probably at the lowest end of the electromagnetic spectrum and does not cause any DNA kill.”

Professor Michael Repacholi, Chairman Emeritus of ICNIRP and Ex-EMF Project Co-Ordinator, World Health Organization said: “WHO fact sheet states very clearly that the mobile phones do not cause cancer. A number of studies conducted to ascertain relationship between the electromagnetic radiation and cancer have not found anything to indicate mobile radiation causing cancer.” Reassuring pregnant women about EMF radiation from mobile tower antennae and handsets, Repacholi said that the penetration depth of the EMF is only 1-2 mm, so it never really gets close to the foetus in any significant amount to cause any damage.

Dr. Rajesh Dikshit, Department of Epidemiology, Urology (DMG), and Tata Medical Centre, who is leading a study on effect of mobile emissions on human health in Mumbai said: “A number of researches and studies have been conducted around the globe to ascertain if there is any relationship between the RF emissions from the mobile phone and cancer. However, there is not enough evidence proving mobile phones cause cancer in humans.”

COAI continues to work with the Government of India, industry associations, medical practitioners, academicians and activists to dispel myths about adverse effects of cell phones and mobile towers.

New Delhi, August 24, 2014:

How many times have you seen a biker hugging a policeman? How many times have you seen a biker thanking him for his diligence, instead of racing away? Today, the 24th of August, the Biker Fraternity did the impossible.

Large group of bikers with 'free hugs for Delhi Police' placards

In a one-of-its-kind ride initiated by Bikers for Good, a Motorcycle Community that rides solely for social causes, more than 15 Biking clubs from Delhi came together to send out a message of appreciation and respect for the Delhi Police.

Commenting on the idea behind the ride, Mohit Ahuja, Founder of Bikers for Good said, “The public is there to protest and criticize the police when they fail to do something. We planned this ride to thank them for taking care of the city, through thick and thin.”

The ride saw close to 500 bikers riding to Jantar Mantar riding bikes ranging from 100cc to 1000cc and above. Together the bikers gave a message of responsibility towards safer roads. The admin of Bikers for Good, Jeet Kandhari quoted, “Biking today is growing. Motorcycle Clubs have members who are students, doctors, CEOs and even higher. Doing something like this will only help us better terms between bikers and the police.”

The bikers gathered to thank Delhi Police and Delhi Traffic Police for their efforts. A huge banner with the club logos was put up, where bikers wrote their messages for the Delhi Police. This banner was later presented to Mr. Ajay Kumar Singh, S.H.O., Parliament Street, Delhi. Kids these days are born geniuses! The way they handle modern gadgets gives

song rightly said 'JAAOO... MAMACHYA GAVALA JAAOO' (Let's go to maternal

addition to this, nuclear family systems have resulted in kids being
distant from their grandparents and thus missing out the important things
required for their upbringing. Parents engrossed in corporate lifestyle
