26th August 2016; Thane: 15years years back, the city of Thane grieved the loss of its gem and favorite leader Dharmaveer Anand Dighe in an unfortunate incident. The citizens of Thane came together on the eve of his death anniversary on 26th August to organize a seminar for the parents of intellectually challenged children. The seminar was organized under the able leadership of Shri Kedar Dighe, President of Dharmaveer Anand Dighe Yuva Pratishthan along with Vishwas Charitable Trust and Jagruti Palak Sanstha.

Jagruti Palak Sanstha has over 300 parents as members who come together to find solutions for making life easier for them and their children with intellectual disability. The seminar was organized in presence Shri Kedar Dighe, Dr. Shubha Thatte, Dr. Meena Shiledar, Mrs. Shamashree Bhonsle, Shri. Arvind Sule of Vishwas Charitable Trust which is one of the oldest organization in Thane working for intellectually challenged kids. “My uncle, Dharmaveer Anand Dighe Saheb was instrumental in hearing and solving problems of the people in Thane. Though we have lost him, I along with other members of Dharmaveer Anand Dighe Yuva Pratisthan are committed to keep his legacy alive and keep working selflessly for the people of Thane. In his remembrance, we recently distributed notebooks to underprivileged kids and today we are here with eminent doctors to help the parents of intellectually challenged kids and their parents”, says Shri Kedar Dighe, President, Dharmaveer Anand Dighe Yuva Pratishthan. “We are also proposing an activity centre to be built for these kids and will be writing to the Government and the Commissioner of Thane” adds Shri Kedar Dighe.

A mentally challenged person is also called PWIDD-Person With Intellectual and Developmental Disability. There are innumerable difficulties in bringing up and supporting such a child. Bringing up a mentally deficient child is a big challenge for any parent, more so if he or she belongs to the financially weaker section of the society and is a daily wage earner. Some of them may even be single parents. Though these kids grow up physically, they are not capable of taking care of themselves due to their mental handicap. This puts the parents to extreme stress leading to frustration and even suicide. Individually, parents face insurmountable odds. “There are many things families can do to help children with psychological disorders. The isolated child with a disorder, who has some interest or talent, may be helped by taking part in a special class or art camp,” says Dr. Shubha Thatte.

“We’ve seen parents do some amazing things with children who are mentally disabled––very moving examples of children who, because of their parents’ efforts, were able to take part in mainstream education and other fields,” adds Dr. Meena Shiledar. “We need more and more such seminars to be organized to make Thane a better place to live.”

Dharmaveer Anand Dighe Yuva Pratishthan was established in the year 2006 and has since then been involved in number of activities focused towards the social and economic development of the people of Thane. The NGO is led by Shri Kedar Dighe, who is truly a new age leader and understands the problems of people to provide holistic solutions.

IIT-Bombay Run For Your Campus initiative, India's first cross campus run

IIT-Bombay’s Run For Your Campus evokes nostalgia for students, alumni and citizens as they join in the run to celebrate their alma mater and its memories

India’s first cross campus run provides a platform to share ideas and network for people from different institutions and walks of life.

Mumbai, August 28: On Sunday, it was nostalgia of a different kind for thousands of participants who were part of a cross campus run at the IIT Bombay campus in Powai. The IIT-Bombay’s Run For Your Campus – the first ever run of its kind in the country – was organised by IIT Bombay in association with Chapter 3. The aim of the event was to give a common platform for current as well as ex-students of institutions and their faculty to interact and mingle with each other even as they shared nostalgia associated with college life.

A total of 4000 participants representing more than 500 colleges and campuses were a part of the run.
Bollywood actor Sidharth Malhotra, a heartthrob for thousands in the country, was present at the venue cheering for the participants. Malhotra, who is known for his lean and muscular physique, is a self-confessed fitness freak.

The Run comprised of two categories: a 5km Walk and an 11 km Lake Run and was open to individuals and corporates.

Speaking about the Run, Prof. Soumyo Mukherjee, Dean Student Affairs, IIT-Bombay said, “We wanted this to be an unusual event that brings back memories of college life. Since people always have a special place in a corner of their heart for their college days, we saw a large number of them participating. Along with our alumni and their families, there were also several entrepreneurs who ran. And of course, there were many fitness enthusiasts too who joined in our IIT-Bombay Run For Your Campus.”

It also saw the use of EquiRun, a distinctive grading system developed by an IIT Mumbai alumnus. EquiRun uses the iRace Grading System and offers exactly equal chance of winning to every race participant immaterial of the gender, age, height, weight, race distance, contour etc. The system reproduces a competitive racer’s ability and pits his performance against it making the race more
competitive, removing any bias and helping to identify the fastest among runners from across the globe running simultaneously.

Speaking of the event, Ashish Bhushan, CEO Chapter 3 said, “IIT-Bombay Run For Your Campus was more like a re-union of sorts where people got to connect with their classmates and college friends after years. Also, this event gave students of different institutions a chance to interact with the alumni. Even as people ran for their institutions and the memories they associate with them, most also got a chance to network and exchange ideas which was great.”

The event saw participation from India’s premier campuses like IIT Madras, IIM Bangalore, IIM Indore, NITIE and many others from Mumbai.

IIM Indore’s Udaan which is associated with the IIT Bombay’s Run for your Campus had its representative team here. “We hope our differently abled heroes will motivate the participants the way a Bollywood hero could do it here. Today’s spectacular participation & organisation inspires us to take this success from Mumbai to the mini Mumbai, Indore.” said Harsh Parmar, co-ordinator Udaan Indore half marathon.

Malhotra, who applauded the participants for choosing to run for their campuses, was all praises for the event. “A run like this is indeed a great platform for everyone to come together. I saw that people were talking, interacting, sharing memories and it really felt so nostalgic. I remembered my college days and friends. We need more events like these and I hope this happens often.”

Building 100 Senior Leaders for India’s Social Sector

Dr. Jayaprakash Narayan, Founder of Lok Satta Party and Mr.Vineet Nayar Founder of Sampark listening to the opening remarks

New Delhi, August 24, 2016: Aritra, a first of its kind, sector level leadership development program was launched today.  This unique program which aims to identify and groom 100 mid-level leaders in the Social Sector for senior leadership roles is being incubated by Dr.Reddy’s Foundation (DRF), Phicus Social Solutions and the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB).

With not many people opting to work in the social sector as a priority career choice, finding leadership talent is a major issue across the globe. This is further aggravated by the fact that there simply isn’t enough investment happening in talent development. A study conducted by McKinsey reports that while in the private sector the average spend on learning and development per employee is about USD 120, it is only USD 29 per employee in the social sector.

As a result, at the senior levels this problem becomes grave given the impact of the C-Suite of the organization, the larger ecosystem and the cause. One emerging strategy has been to recruit professionals from the Corporate sector.

While individuals from the Corporate sector bring professional management expertise, lack of awareness of the sector and acclimatization are challenges. As the COO of a large NGO ruefully said: “We hired about 15 senior leaders from the Corporate sector to meet our growth needs…five left and for the rest the settling-in time has been as high as nine to 15 months!”

At the launch today at the India Habitat Center, the speakers - Dr. Jaya Prakash Narayan, Founder of the Lok Satta Party and Vineet Nayar, former CEO of HCL Technologies and Founder of the Sampark Foundation - lauded this effort and spoke of the criticality of senior leadership roles in organization-building and mission advancement.

The Aritra program, an intensive, selection-based journey where over an 18-month period, participants will be coached as they attend sessions at IIM Bangalore, and leverage Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) as well as relevant exposure visits to gain relevant skills and capabilities to accelerate their own professional journeys. Aritra aims to build a pool of senior leaders who will serve as beacons of change and transformation. Joining hands in this effort with Phicus, DRF and IIMB are the Center for Creative Leadership, CoCoon Consulting, an array of seasoned experts across various domains and disciplines and 50+ NGOs.

Professor Vasanthi Srinivasan from the Organizational Behaviour & Human Resources Management area, IIMB spoke about the imminent need for such senior leadership development programmes to ensure sustainability of the social sector organizations in a rapidly changing ecosystem.

The vision is far-reaching. As the program incubators, Shamik Trehan of DRF and Dr. Vandana Nadig Nair of Phicus jointly echo: “We hope that Aritra is the first step in a longer, more sustained journey of collaboratively addressing the talent issues in the social sector in India”.

The program goes live in November 2016 when the application process for Round 1 commences.

Inspired by the love icon Lord Krishna ‘Kaluwa’ to go on floors

Director Shyam Joshi’s forthcoming film Kaluwa will go on floors on 28th August.

Speaking about his film, the director said, “The title Kaluwa is inspired by the biggest love icon Lord Krishna. Krishna is called as ‘Kaluwa’. My script is about feudal age. Even in today, there are many places in India where the feudal laws are still implemented, where people are still under ‘Thakur’s raaj and law and order does not reach to the last man.”

“The conception of conceiving the script came because of the big void between the entertainment segment and the informative segment in filmmaking. Today 10 to 20% of films are the high-end filmmaking or reality-based filmmaking while 70 to 80% are the generic filmmaking, what predecessors like Subhas Ghai, Mahesh Bhatt, Manmohan Desai even Raj Kapoor has done. That’s why I targeted for a flawless love story.”, The director explained.

Joshi stated that Kaluwa is a runaway love story where two people by default come together from a polarity background. “ The two character’s journey in the film is like a roller-coaster ride. I believe it’s very full-proof genre in filmmaking because love-stories are always loaded with a lot of tension, obstacles, and adversities. It’s a genuine, Indian ethnical story.”

“I wanted to make a smooth story so that people do not have to use their brain to decipher. The audience should identify with the film,” he added.

Asked about the shooting location, Joshi replied, “We are fortunate to shoot this on Mirjaan Fort and some parts will be shoot Kolhapur and Satara. And other lateral portions will be filming in Mumbai.”

Kaluwa is produced by Md. Arif Khan, under the banner Vaartul Films Pvt. Ltd.

The romance drama tentatively will be releasing this year-end.

Working Mothers Can Breastfeed Too, With Planning and Practice, Say Experts

·         Breast milk is the first and most natural food for infants
·         The immunity-boosting antibodies in it keep baby away from infections in the first six months
Ghaziabad, 26th August 2016: Within the first hour in the mother’s arms, the baby will be ready for the first feed. Breast milk is the natural and first food for babies, providing adequate calories, minerals and vitamins and all nutrients for the initial months of life. Not only does the infant benefit, but it also enhances maternal health. Doctors world over advise mothers to start breastfeeding soon after birth, maintaining the practice for the next 6 months exclusively, after which baby can be weaned to other foods.
Dr Sanjay Sharma, Consultant, Pediatrics Columbia Asia Hospital, Ghaziabad says, “Babies fed on mother’s milk are less likely to be lactose intolerant. It also ensures better bone health and lowers the probability for toddlers to develop cavities in the teeth. Plus the mother’s milk has enough water and nutrients to keep a baby well fed for the first six months. It also strengthens the bond of the mother and child.”
However breastfeeding is not easy for modern mothers who are working. Those at home too struggle with the work of running busy households while responding to the needs of their infants.
Guidelines for new working mothers by Dr Sanjay Sharma:
  • Try to ease your baby gradually onto a bowl and spoon or bottle with pre-pumped milk if you have only 3 months of maternity leave. Try using a high-quality electric breast pump to express milk. You could do this during the workday, in a private space you could request the company for. Do refrigerate the milk as soon as you pump. Your child's caregiver can give your baby bottles of your expressed breast milk. This way you'll still be able to nurse your child whenever you're at work.
  • Talk to your doctor about weaning if you have 6 months of maternity leave. You can introduce this gradually, so that your baby does not have to deal with separation from you and a change in food together.
  • Avoid going back to work before your maternity leave runs out. Focus on establishing a steady milk supply.
  • Pat your baby to sleep rather than having her rely on the sucking motion to sleep.
  • Consider that your baby may need more night-time nursing in the initial months. So do keep your own nutrition up, and ask the office for flexi-time.
  • Give pumped breast milk at room temperature. Microwaving milk is an absolute no-no. If possible, label the bottles with date and time to keep a track.
