EdX CEO Appointed to New International Commission on Financing Global Education

New Delhi, 7th October 2015: 

edX CEO Anant Agarwal has been appointed by Gordon Brown, UN Special Envoy for Global Education, to the International Commission on Financing Global Education. Anant will join more than twenty world leaders, including five former presidents and prime ministers and three Nobel Prize recipients, to review the future of global education.

The Commission met during the UN General Assembly to start building the economic case to inspire and persuade world leaders to action on September 29th, 2015.

The Commission explored how, over the next 20 years, education could lead to greater economic growth, better health outcomes, and improved global security.

The group comes together at a crucial time when increased conflict has forced millions of children out of the classrooms to become refugees with no prospects of education.

Maharashtra No. 1 State for its tourism potential



Mumbai: The survey compiled by HVS in association with the World Travel & Tourism Council, India Initiative (WTTCII) rated Maharashtra after analysing the state-wise potential of Travel and Tourism in India, and assessing the relative competitiveness of different states in the country.

The evaluation has been carried out for 30 states. Maharashtra ranks 1 in this year's survey moving up one position from the previous edition. The state benefits from a strong economy, good infrastructure, presence of a sizeable quantum of branded hotel rooms and a variety of demand generators to occupy these rooms. In line with these factors, Maharashtra has recorded perfect scores in four parameters – tourist visits, GSDP per capita, effectiveness of marketing campaign and aircraft movement. The state has performed well across all other parameters with the exception of its expenditure on tourism.

As per the Tourism Highlights 2015 Edition report by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the total number of International Tourist Arrivals (ITA) worldwide was 1,133 million in 2014, India attracted 0.67% of the world's international tourist arrivals out of which Maharashtra attracted 4.5 million tourists from foreign countries and over 8.4 million domestic tourists, which is largest than any other state in the country.

MARINER OF THE SEAS TO HOST ASIA’S FIRST COSPLAY FESTIVAL AT SEA NEXT JANUARY


New Delhi, October 8th, 2015 – A world of fantasy, creativity and entertainment is coming onboard Royal Caribbean International’s Mariner of the Seas next January, when it plays host to Asia’s first cosplay festival at sea.  Organised by The Singapore Cosplay Club to celebrate its 15th birthday, “COSFEST SEA: The Rising Tide” is a special 3-night weekend cruise from January 8 to 11 from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur (Port Klang).  It features the region’s top cosplayers for the championship and exciting cosplay entertainment and activities, which is expected to draw hundreds of cosplay fans from around the region.

The biggest highlight of this theme cruise is the Asia Cosplay Meet Championship which will feature three contestants from eight countries and territories namely China, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand vying for the top spot.  This will be open for public viewing for all the guests onboard to catch the action.  There is also a special preview before the competition begins.  More details on the contestants will be unveiled at a later stage.

Onboard, the cosplayers will also have chances to mingle with one another and discover about different cosplay cultures.  As for the guests, they are welcome to join in the mood in their own cosplay outfits.  Moreover, they can even get up close and personal encounters with celebrity cosplayers such as Neneko from Taiwan who will be onboard to offer photo opportunities and autograph sessions.

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

SOP – Statement of Purpose is an acronym that is commonly used in reference to a student’s application. We jocularly remark that SOP actually stands for, “Story of Prospective” student, but that is not far from the truth. Ideally, an SOP should be regarded by every applicant as an opportunity to fashion a personal story that provides crucial insight that cannot be ordinarily gleaned by studying transcripts and letters of recommendations.

The fundamental difference between a reasonably well-written SOP and an exceptional SOP is the manner in which a student approaches the task, organizes his material and presents it in a refreshingly original manner

In short, an SOP is a highly personalised narrative that attempts to give the reader a unique glimpse into a student’s character, intellect, formative experiences and future ambitions, both academic and professional. An interesting and well-written SOP encourages an Admission Officer to take a closer interest in a student, understand his motivations for applying and, if the story is compelling and original enough, it boosts a student’s chances of admission to a college of his /her choice. Deconstructing a typical SOP, reveals how most students can write effective SOPs by sticking to six segments.

In essence, it needs to be an engaging story, but invariably, the word restrictions (it normally ranges between 500-800 words) sometimes do not allow students sufficient “elbow room” to fashion a comprehensive life story. Writing your story within the specified word limit is one of the most challenging tasks faced by students. Achieving this is usually harder than it appears, but most students can create interesting SOPs if they adhere to certain basic rules. 
Honesty, that much-invoked term, is the most effective route to achieving this goal.

Although it is not mandated to follow the “six segment” rule, it is highly recommended that every student follow a chronological timeline and write in an easygoing manner, without trying too hard to impress in terms of language or accomplishments. More importantly, there should be no fabrication or embellishment of facts and incidents, in an effort to portray oneself as exceptional.

The first segment should introduce you as a person and also include some hint of what you might write in the latter part of the SOP. Your introduction needs to be precise and should encapsulate your character and ambitions in a few short sentences.

It should be borne in mind that the quality of writing or ideas expressed in the introduction will encourage Admission Officers to delve deeper into a student’s SOP. If the introduction sounds formulaic or lacks originality, most Admission Officers are likely to cast it aside and return to it once they have sampled other interesting essays.

Segment two should provide a brief description of your academic or professional goals. You need to explain why you have a particular goal in mind and its relevance to you. More importantly, it would be useful to describe your long-term career goals and the role you would like to play after acquiring sufficient experience.

Segment three should provide a detailed character-and-goals sketch. You elaborate about your coursework / research work / professional career. Talk about why you chose this coursework/research work and the type of knowledge you have gained from these courses and internships. Also mention how this coursework / research work is essential towards achieving your career goals. Working professionals need to describe their skill / knowledge base and their professional accomplishments. They can also expand a bit on their worldview, especially the cultural and personal insights they have gained during this period.

Segment four is considered one of the most important sections of your SOP. Here you explain why you require pursuing the specified education program. You have to write in detail about the need to acquire advanced, theoretical knowledge in a particular academic area in order to contribute to the issues mentioned earlier. Also mention about how your education will be beneficial on a broader sense for people or organizations such as, your society at large, country, etc.

Segment five requires you to expand on how you have chosen a particular program or college. In the course of this paragraph, you can expand on the benefits of applying to a particular college, namely, curriculum, research opportunities or teaching methodology. The key here is to correlate the college and the program to your goals. This would require extensive research of the college and undergraduate / graduate program. You also need to demonstrate your natural inclination towards the program and how the college’s existing student population will be benefited by your admission.

In other words, you should also make a case for your admission by portraying yourself as more than just a bookish one-dimensional person. The more varied your skill-set, chances are, the college will regard you as an exciting prospect, one worthy for admission. If you can portray yourself as an asset, most colleges would be vying with each other to get you on board.

The sixth and the final segment is the much-neglected conclusion. You should use this as a forum to summarize your personal talents and highlight the contributions you are likely to make, once enrolled in the program. Also, reiterate how the program will enable you to achieve your future professional goals.

Did you know today 4 out of 10 children’s performance in school suffers due to poor vision?

Bangalore, Oct 2015: On World Sight Day, Essilor, the world leader in ophthalmic optics, is launching a national campaign to conduct eye screenings in as many as 10,000 people including school children and traffic policemen, and educate them about the importance of eye health and need to be vigilant about it.

With as many as 550 million Indians living with uncorrected vision, the country suffers major health and economic consequences of this seemingly minor concern.
As per studies, the risk of failing a grade is more than 3 times for children who have visual acuity below 20/20 versus children with good visual acuity. Today 4 out of 10 children’s performance in school suffers due to poor vision.

In a study conducted among working men and women - wearing spectacles, increased productivity by 34% and 20% increase in income. However, lack of awareness and absence of easy access to corrective measures remain crucial factors responsible for this gap.

The Essilor initiative focuses on the simple step of getting your eyes tested and wearing spectacles, if needed, to correct vision. Another focus of the campaign is to inculcate the importance of getting an annual comprehensive eye exam, which helps in early detection of eye related issues like Glaucoma, Cataract and AMD (age related macular degeneration).
The eye screenings will be conducted across the month at schools, IT parks and with Bangalore city traffic police personnel.

“Nearly half of India’s population needs vision correction. Based on findings, 70% of the reasons for uncorrected refractive errors are non-financial such as lack of awareness, avoidance and lack of priority. New Delhi, Oct 2015: From the north Indian art form of Kathak to the fire dance Bharatnatyam that originated in temples of Tamil Nadu, our landscape is replete with classical dance varieties of unparalleled beauty and dramatic poise! This week, the majestic ruins of Delhi’s Purana Qila will provide a fine ambience to a unique festival celebrating India’s classical dance forms.

Presented by the Sahitya Kala Parishad & Department of Art, Culture & Languages, Government of Delhi, the Old Fort Dance Festival will open on October 8, and will showcase over five days some of India’s most treasured classical dance forms.

Hon’ble Chief Minister of Delhi, Shri Arvind Kejriwal will inaugurate the festival on the evening of October 8; Hon’ble Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi, Shri Manish Sisodia will be the Chief Guest; and Hon’ble Minister of Water, Tourism, Art, Culture & Languages, Shri Kapil Mishrawill be the Guest of Honor.

The festival of choreographies in classical dance forms will see participation of veteran and legendary dance artists and their groups in multiple dance forms including Pandit Birju Maharaj, Madhvi Mudgal and Leela Samson, among others.

“The repertoire of Indian classical dances represents centuries of culture and tradition that has been preserved and sustained by generations of devoted exponents and earnest artists. Across the globe, Indian classical dance forms are appreciated and loved by dance lovers. We believe the festival will help extend the reach of classical dance forms to not just connoisseurs of dance but also to common people,” says Pandit Birju Maharaj.

“The idea behind the Old Delhi Dance Festival to juxtapose cultural heritage with structural heritage is a wonderful concept. The Purana Qila presents a poignant background to the performance of India’s most notable classical dance forms, some of whom originated centuries back in ancient and medieval times,” says Ms Leela Samson.

Bharati Shivaji & Group will open the festival with a performance of Kerala’s beautifully graceful Mohiniyattam, one of the eight classical dance forms of India recognized by the Sangeet Natak Academy. Performer-choreographer, Bharati Shivaji is a Padmashri award winner whose name is today synonymous with the exquisite Mohiniyattam.

Eminent Bharatnatyam exponent, Leela Samson and her group will perform on the second day of the festival, bringing the expressions and sculpturesque poses of Bharatnatyam to an audience of Delhi’s dance lovers.

Kuchipudi, the classical dance form from Andhra Pradesh, will be the dance of the day on the third day of the Purana Qila Dance Festival. The eminent dancing couple of Raja and Radha Reddy and their group will bring alive the much-loved art form from south India.

The oldest surviving dance form of India, Odissi will be at centre stage on the penultimate day of the festival, with Padma Shri Madhvi Mudgal choreographing the performance of the soft and graceful dance form.
