TV Today's Shams Khan wins at the Red Ink Awards

Shams Khan from TV Today Network wins at the Red Ink Awards for the series – Koi Lauta De Mere

New Delhi 15th April, 2015 - Shams Khan, Executive Editor – Dilli Aaj Tak won the prestigious ‘Mumbai Press Club Red Ink Awards for Excellence in Indian Journalism – 2015’ under the ‘Human Rights - Television’ Category.  Shams Khan has won the accolade for the series ‘Koi Lauta De Mere’. The 5 episode mini-series highlights the plight of victims who faced government and police injustice for being of a different faith.
Shams Khan led the Aaj Tak team that did an in-depth research on a few selected people who were victims of a prejudiced system. The exclusive series by Aaj Tak created a ripple effect with some of the protagonists being immediately released from prison after the show was telecast on the channel.
Aaj Tak has taken the mantle of journalism to the next level by unravelling these stories of human suffering in the series. The channel gave voice to the unheard plight of a few leading to change for many. Among the many stories the series unravelled the life of Javed, a native of Rampur in Uttar Pradesh who had to pay the price of falling in love with a Pakistani girl. Something that led the UP STF framing various cases of spying on him and locking him behind bars for 12 years. The series also covered the incredible struggle of the boy ‘terrorist' Mohammad Aamir whose youth was destroyed because of his wrongful arrest and 14-year long incarceration. Aamir was one such boy who was framed by the Delhi police in 19 bomb blast cases. He suffered humiliation, torture at the hands of a few corrupt police personnel and was put behind bars. His only crime was that he was a Muslim. He got his freedom after 14 years and that too only after Team Vardaat from Aaj Tak showed his story.
The story of Syed Wasif Haider was no different as he was wrongly accused of an alleged role in the Kanpur bomb blasts and was jailed for eight years. In another case Nasir Hussain, a 32-year-old was locked up for nearly seven years in jail after the UP Police accused him of sedition and planning terror attacks. He walked free in 2013 after a 71-year-old Hindu spiritual leader Swami Sivananda testified in court that Nasir had been abducted from his ashram in Uttarakhand days before the police recorded his arrest.
The bitter truth that the poor and powerless are simply forgotten in India’s vast and disorganised justice system were shown in the series by Aaj Tak. This plight can be seen in the episode around Jagjivan Ram Yadav, who was arrested in 1968 for allegedly killing his sister-in-law but  never faced trial because authorities lost the records regarding his case. His family had long ago given him up for dead. But when Aajtak showed his story in 2006, the administration woke up, leading to his release from jail after 37 years. However because of the trauma he had faced while in jail, he had gone into a state of shock and lost his power of speech. From the day he has stepped out of the jail nobody has heard him saying a single word. It is through Aaj Tak that even someone like him without a voice was heard.

Second Pacemaker on a 68 year old patient through an unconventional route

Doctors at Fortis Escorts Heart Institute (FEHI) implant a second pacemaker on a 68 year, two time cancer survivor through an unconventional route
·         Only few cases of pacemaker installed in lower abdominal cavity in the world
·         Patient is a two time cancer survivor and had a pacemaker installed for the second time

New Delhi, April 15th, 2015:, Fortis Escorts Heart Institute, pioneer and Centre of Excellence in Cardiac Care for over 25 years,  conducted an unusual  heart surgery by installing the pacemaker in the lower abdominal cavity of a 68 year old woman who is also a second time cancer survivor. This is one of the few such cases reported in India. The surgical team of doctors was headed by Dr. Aparna Jaswal, Senior Consultant in the Department of Cardiac Pacing and Electrophysiology.

The patient, Naseema Begum, came to the doctors at FEHI two years ago, when she had her first pacemaker implanted in the right heart cavity while she was suffering from cancer of the left breast. Subsequently, the cancer spread to the right breast and caused infection which trickled to the pacemaker installed in her right heart cavity. With a history of double mastectomy, doctors were presented with a unique challenge as there was no area in the chest or upper abdomen where the device could be re-implanted.

Dr. Aparna Jaswal and her team performed the surgery of implanting the second pacemaker through a different route as opposed to the conventional one. The new pacemaker was given an unusual location through the leg vein in the lower abdomen, also referred to as the retro peritoneal way.

Speaking on the procedure, Dr. Aparna Jaswal, designation said, “For a two time cancer survivor, the patient has shown tremendous courage in surviving a series of illness. In this case, the patient had undergone cancer treatment and that compressed the area where implanting the device was more viable. So we had to take the retro peritoneal way. And therefore, we also had to import special leads to complete the surgery successfully.”

Dr. Somesh Mittal, Zonal Director, FEHI said, “Fortis Escorts Heart Institute and the highly trained teams in every area of cardiac care is vastly experienced and has pioneered several cardiac techniques. Our doctors have produced results that are comparable to the best in the world. Through this unusual route in implanting the device in the lower abdominal cavity, the doctors have continued to push new boundaries in medical excellence.”

The family of the patient expressed their gratitude, “We are really grateful to Dr. Aparna Jaswal and her team. She has reaffirmed our faith in doctors as we had very little hope of our mother’s survival. But Dr. Aparna has restored our happiness to our family”

A pacemaker is a small device that is placed in the chest or upper abdomen to help control abnormal slow heart rhythms or arrhythmia. During an arrhythmia, the heart may not be able to pump enough blood to the body. This can cause symptoms such as fatigue (tiredness), shortness of breath, or fainting. Severe arrhythmias can damage the body's vital organs and may even cause loss of consciousness or death.  The pacemaker uses electrical pulses to prompt the heart to beat at a normal rate. In addition, the pulse generator attached to the pacemaker contains a small computer processor that can be programmed to set the rate of the pacemaker, the pattern of pacing, the energy output, and various other parameters. The pulse generator for most modern permanent pacemakers weighs one to two ounces.

According to available data, approximately 20000 patients in India which has a population of over 120 million receive ICD implants every year. Medical tourism also constitutes for 7000 – 8000 pacemaker implants every year.

Fortis Escorts Heart Institute (FEHI), Delhi, a pioneer and centre of excellence in cardiac care, is celebrating 25 years of path-breaking work and service to the numerous heart patients, who have benefitted from treatment, at this outstanding facility. Armed with clinical expertise and cutting-edge medical technology, the hospital has set enviable benchmarks in Cardiac Bypass Surgery, Minimally Invasive Surgery, Interventional Cardiology, Non-invasive Cardiology, Pediatric Cardiology and Pediatric Cardiac Surgery. Till date, FEHI has successfully completed over 1,72,000 Coronary Angiographies, over 90,000 Cardiac Surgeries and almost 52,000 Coronary Angioplasties, in addition to several life-saving procedures. The hospital also performed India’s first Trans Catheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) and Bioresorable Vascular Scaffold (BVS); Asia Pacific’s first Directional Atherectomy, Angioscopy, Drug Eluting Stenting, etc. Over the years, FEHI has cloned a Heart Care Network of 19 hospitals and Heart Command Centers in India and abroad. It has also launched the revolutionary e-ICU program, enabling remote and timely access to critical care. Fortis Escorts Heart Institute has won numerous awards and accolades, the most recent among them being the ‘Best Cardiology Hospital’ at the ICICI Lombard & CNBC TV18 India Healthcare Awards for 2012, 2013 and the No 1. Ranking in the Private Cardiac category Hospital by The Week Nielson Best Hospitals Survey, 2014.

No Clear Path for Prospective Cybersecurity Specialists
Better training and credentials are needed to help industry meet the growing demand

Do you know how to become a cybersecurity professional? Do you know what courses to take, which certifications are needed, and what skills employers require? As a hiring manager, can you assess whether your new hire knows how to write secure mobile apps, defend systems against cyberattacks, or protect customer credit-card data?
The truth is, not many people can answer those questions. And that uncertainty, experts say, is a problem for the cybersecurity industry. Its rapid growth during the past decade has led to an unclear educational path for students. There is also an absence of generally accepted qualifications that tell hiring managers and human resources departments which job candidates have the right experience and credentials.
“This confusion causes the profession to grow less efficiently than it could,” says IEEE Senior Member Greg Shannon, chief scientist for the CERT Division at Carnegie Mellon University Software Engineering Institute, in Pittsburgh, and chair of theIEEE Cybersecurity Initiative. “People can’t say, ‘These are the credentials I need’ and ‘This is how much it is going to cost me to get them.’”
The lack of clarity, Shannon says, has contributed to a widespread shortage of trained, experienced cybersecurity professionals. Similarly, it has created a challenge for employers to hire people with the right skills. HR reps find themselves confronted with a variety of certifications from about two dozen organizations.
“There are people out there who are being positioned, rightly or wrongly, beyond their skills to address cybersecurity,” Shannon says. “Meanwhile, not enough new people are entering the profession to fill the void.”
LET’S SET STANDARDS
To bridge the gap, researchers from the Pell Center at Salve Regina University, in Newport, R.I., are calling on the cybersecurity industry to create professional standards for those in the field. In July, they issued “Professionalizing Cybersecurity,”a report that calls for an overarching professional association to create clear paths for a variety of careers.

“What we propose is not just a way to put more people in the pipeline,” says Pell Fellow Francesca Spidalieri, who coauthored the report with Lt. Col. Sean Kern, a Pell Center adjunct fellow with the U.S. Air Force. “It is also about guaranteeing that those in the industry reach the highest professional standards.”
The industry has tried to respond to the needs of the marketplace by developing certifications and other educational standards for various career paths. However, these have sprung up individually. They often overlap each other and leave gaps.
The report found that cybersecurity is composed of 31 different specialties dealing with such areas as information assurance compliance, systems security architecture, and digital forensics. These specialties are served by at least 23 different certification programs from such organizations as the American Society for Industrial Security, the Computer Security Institute, and the International Society for Professionals in E-Commerce. Plus, the field is rife with conflicting definitions and competing requirements.
Universities should establish a more unified educational path for students interested in a cybersecurity career, Kern says, noting, “There are no nationally or internationally accredited programs that universities can adhere to and publicize in a way that a student can say, ‘That’s where I can obtain the kind of education I need to get started in the cybersecurity profession.’”
LEARNING THE LANGUAGE
The Pell report offers recommendations for developing a more organized cybersecurity profession, including establishing clear bodies of knowledge and educational paths for the 31 workforce specialties.
“You really have to have that body of knowledge, along with some means of assessing if a person understands that knowledge and can apply it creatively against whatever problems an organization faces,” Spidalieri says. “That’s the language of a profession.”
There are many different roles to fill in cybersecurity, says IEEE Senior Member Gary McGraw, chief technology officer of Cigital—a software security firm in Dulles, Va.—and a volunteer for the IEEE Cybersecurity Initiative.
“Each role needs to have its own education and experience path,” McGraw says. “If you think of security like medicine, you need first responders, nurses, doctors, brain surgeons, and everything in between.”
The largest cybersecurity certification program, the Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), would serve the emergency medical responders, nurses, and maybe doctors, but it wouldn’t help the brain surgeons and other specialists, McGraw says.

“Organizing a common body of knowledge in any area is always useful,” he says. “A CISSP certification guarantees only that you have a modicum of knowledge about a swath of cybersecurity. Your knowledge may be wide but not very deep.”

Spidalieri and Kern also call for each specialty to develop its own code of ethics, something currently lacking. “Part of what we learn in engineering these systems correctly is how to break in,” McGraw says. “You need to break into systems and find security flaws before hackers do.” Otherwise, he points out, some will use those same skills for nefarious purposes.

Baisakhi Mela Ends After Three days of Revelry

·         Presented by Punjabi Academy and Department of Art Culture & Languages, Govt. of Delhi, three-day Baisakhi Mela is an ode to the culture of Punjab
  • Singers Hardy Sandhu, and Ami Virk perform on last evening

New Delhi, April 12, 2015: After three days of food, music and cultural events, curtains came down today on this year’s Baisakhi Mela, which celebrated with √©lan the cultural heritage and legacy of Punjab.
Popular Punjabi singer-actors Hardy Sandhu and Ami Virk regaled the audience on the final day of the festival where nine well-known Punjabi singers performed over three days.

The festival was presented by Punjabi Academy and Department of Art, Culture & languages, Government of Delhi to mark the beginning of the Punjabi New Year with Baisakhi.

In a setting that replicated a typical vibrant Punjabi village, the Mela put different facets of Punjabi life on display. The best exotic food from Punjab was accompanied by the most authentic arts and artefacts such as Phulkari, Nale Parande, Bangles, inlaid wooden Furniture & Punjabi Juttis. The Festival is also enriched with beautiful cultural programmes such as Gatka, Bazigar, Dhadi, Naqal, Gidha, been, algoza dhol and Bhangra.

Other singers who performed at the festival were Harshdeep, Vatsala Mehra, Master Saleem and Shipra Goyal.

“We are delighted by the response people of Delhi have shown by flocking to the festival. If you live in Delhi, you live in the midst of a thriving Punjabi community. The Punjabi food and culture is bound to touch you in many ways. However, the urban shift of Delhi means we never get a glimpse of a true Punjabi setting, which is ethnic in every way. Punjabi culture is a rich tradition and this annual Festival is a vehicle that gives us an opportunity to present these beautiful forms of Punjabi Art and Culture,” says Secretary, Art, Culture & Languages, Government of Delhi.

“Punjab is a land of rich cultural heritage. Through the Baisakhi Festival, we try to re-create every aspect of Punjabi life in a traditional setting of a Punjabi Mela where the traditional artefacts of Punjab are displayed and sold. The Phulkari, the Punjabi juttis, the wooden furniture designs are hardly ever seen in our everyday urban lives and the Baisakhi Festival is the place where you can find them. Besides, several well-known singers of different genres also came together to present the wide and versatile facets of Punjabi music, be it the soulful Sufi music that talks about the sufi saints of Punjab, or the foot tapping bhangra, pop music,” says Mr. Jawahar Dhawan, Secretary, Punjabi Academy.

About Punjabi Academy
Delhi after independence emerged as a cosmopolitan city of diverse cultures and languages. It has always been the endeavour of the Delhi Govt. to provide all possible facilities for the development and promotion of different languages and projection of the composite culture of Delhi. Thus, the Delhi Govt. established the Punjabi Academy in September, 1981 to propagate and promote Punjabi language, literature and culture as an integral part of composite culture of Delhi.

Ever since its inception, the Academy has been playing a catalytic role in the propagation of Punjabi literary and cultural activities, in the spheres of music, folk dances, seminars, symposia, short story, poetry, novel, literary criticism, drama etc. where it has assumed a significant role and status of the premier organization in the field of Punjabi culture.
