Marionette lines around mouth can kill your smile. Dermal fillers can bring it back to life, says Dr Rashmi Manjunath, Senior Dermatologist, Nu Clinic, Bangalore
Amid the stressful life, finding a smiling face is like a breather. A smile beats all the pressures of life and soothes the mood, of oneself and of others alike. A mesmerising smile adds to the beauty as well. A dull, drab face livens up with a smile and everything around starts looking positive and lively. The magic of smile is such.
Sometimes, however, lines around the mouth dampens the liveliness of the face. These lines, called gummy lines or Marionette lines, become a source of worry as it gives the face a very wacky look. So if people around you have begun to mock at your smile, then blame it on the gummy lines.
Everybody has to fight with these odd lines -- some do it early and some later in life. It all depends on how fast your skin loses elasticity.
The vertical lines and wrinkles that start at the corners of the mouth and stretch right up to the chin are called Marionette lines. They are visible even when you have no expression on your face but when you smile or laugh, they turn into deeper folds and give the appearance of sagging and ageing.
These lines also give your face an angry, worried or unhappy look. In older men and women, the marionette lines are much visible and obvious, along with several other such wrinkles and folds. Usually in the elderly the area around the mouth is often criss-crossed by a wide variety of lines and wrinkles. However, in some relatively younger people too, these lines may become prominent after their skin loses its elasticity and starts sagging.
As we age, our skin loses its flexibility and elasticity and starts sagging. Over the years, the creases and lines that form on our face each time we laugh or frown also start becoming more permanent. Marionette lines
too are a
result of this.
Now what is the solution to fight out these stubborn lines? A solution which is simple and needs no downtime. If you are spending your time finding that one particular solution, then your answer lies in dermal fillers. New age dermal fillers like Restylane have been designed specifically to treat and ‘fill’ such folds and wrinkles like nasolabial and marionette lines.
Restylane is a family of hyaluronic acid based dermal fillers that are administered in the skin to add more volume to it, to fill up lines and wrinkles and restore youthful contours. It produces instant results by adding fullness to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, including the lines from your nose to the corners of your mouth, the area just below the nose and above the upper lip; the corners of the mouth; and the marionette lines.
Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the skin that is responsible for giving the skin its elasticity. A hydrophilic substance, it also promotes water absorption and gives the skin much needed hydration as it retains water and moisture. With age, the natural reserves of hyaluronic acid start depleting, and slowly give the skin an ageing look. How much of the filler will be required to treat you depends on how much prominent and well founded the lines are. The impact of a session lasts up to six months.
In case your gummy lines bother you to the extent that you have stopped smiling, don’t do that. A simple smile and deep breath help relax the mind. Do not let gummy lines steal your peace of mind. Just let dermal fillers help you out. Smile on!
