Leading artists pay unique tribute to the Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar

December 2014: Sachin Tendulkar has been paid a rich tribute by talented contemporary artists from India in a unique show titled “Deconstructed Innings – A Tribute to India’s Greatest Sporting Icon”. Conceptualized by Kiran Desai and co-curated with Veeranganakumari Solanki; the show is being hosted at the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA), Mumbai from December 18, 2014 to February 15, 2015Under the aegis of TenArt, ten artists have given their own unique rendition of various aspects of Sachin Tendulkar’s glorious cricketing life.

The artists had the opportunity to develop their ideas and creative renditions through their interactions with Sachin, who offered them all his support and encouragement. The exhibition will feature over 10 exhibits of various genres including installations, paintings and sculptures. The contemporary Indian artists who will be showcased at the exhibition are Trilochan Anand, GR Iranna, Hema Upadhyay, Jagannath Panda, Manjunath Kamath, Remen Chopra, Riyas Komu, Shreyas Karle, Sunil Gawde and Vibha Galothra.

Kiran Desai, co-founder of TenArt has conceptualised the initiative of bringing art and sport on the same platform. Kiran has co-curated the exhibition along with noted art curator and writer Veeranganakumari Solanki with Mrs. Pheroza Godrej - Chairperson, NGMA mentoring the exhibition.

Speaking on the occasion, Kiran Desai, TenArt said, “This is the first of its kind art show which has blended sport and art in India. With Deconstructed Innings, we have brought together the passion of a cricket crazy country and nation with a rich tradition of art. Sachin seemed the natural choice as the first subject of such an exciting journey. We believe that through this initiative, sport like art will inspire a generation”.

"Deconstructed Innings" where art and sports intersect, is a patronage to both sport and art. The ten artists have collaborated with Sachin Tendulkar through a series of interactions to ‘de-construct’ the innings of an icon’s life into an understanding of the notion of a legend and the perfection associated with creation alongside the existence of personal ideologies and histories,” added Veeranganakumari Solanki, curator of the exhibition.

Mrs. Pheroza Godrej, Chairperson NGMA said, “This is a proud moment for the NGMA and for all art lovers in India. Cricket has always been something that unites people from across nations, cultures and classes. The synergies of the way in which this exhibition was created is the base on which the collaborations have creatively expanded from the cricket pitch into an art space. The coming together of an internationally recognised sports icon and hero of Indian cricket – Sachin Tendulkar, with ten contemporary artists is the beginning of a new dialogue that explores cross-disciplinary creativity. Cricket is a regular feature of Indian life and Sachin Tendulkar continues to be the star of the sport even after laying down his professional bat. To combine the most popular icon of cricket in such a creative project with contemporary artists is indeed a unique endeavour.”

Sporting icon Sachin Tendulkar said, “As a lover of art myself, I can find a lot of similarities in the way that an artist constructs an exhibit with the way a batsman constructs an innings. Each has a lot of stages and its finality is visible and satisfying to one’s heart at the end of the journey. I am speechless at the final result of all these 10 exhibits. The artists and their creativity must be applauded by all of us and I am humbled by this tribute”.

“Deconstructed Innings” will be open for the public at the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA), Mumbai fromDecember 18, 2014 to February 15, 2015.
