History Created: Food Grain Reaches Agartala from Vizag Using Bangladesh Route for the First Time
New Delhi:
In a first for the country, SARR
Freights, an end to end logistics provider successfully delivered the first
tranche of 5000 metric tones (MT) of food grains in Agartala from Vizag using
Sea-Riverine-Road route and passing through parts of Bangladesh. The successful delivery was part of a pilot
undertaken on behalf of Food Corporation of India (FCI), which is exploring alternate
ways of transporting food grains to North Eastern region of the country in
coordination with government of India and Bangladesh respectively.
FCI
has awarded the contract for transportation of a total 10,000 MT of food grains
to Agartala to SARR Freights, which
is to be delivered in two consignments of 5,000 MT each. SARR has successfully
delivered the first consignment of 5000 MT.
The
successful delivery by SARR Freights
assumes significance as the new route is expected to reduce transit distance
from Vizag to Northeast region of the country by almost 80 percent and thereby
paves way for easier, faster and regular transportation of food grains to the
region which often faces shortage.
Commenting on successful
delivery of the first tranche, Mr. Sunil Kapoor, Managing Director, SARR
Freights said, “SARR Frieghts has unparalleled expertise and experience in difficult
regions including states of J&K, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and the
North-eastern states, but the successful accomplishment of FCI pilot project is
special achievement as it involved inter-country coordination and usages of
different modes of transportation. The strategic route has the potential of
revitalizing growth in the entire region and can contribute immensely towards
industrial growth of the North East in the future.”
The
new route also helps in overcoming some hurdles of old route (using rail/road
transportation), which is often disrupted due to rough geographic terrain,
roadblocks and other issues. Currently,
the new Sea-Riverine-Road route through Bangladesh is only opened for FCI.
SARR
Freights will shortly undertake the shipment of second tranche of 5,000 MT of
food grains to Agartala using the new route.
