Safer journey for Auto rickshaw riders in Mumbai

New Delhi:

The law ministry in India has cleared a plan that allows the use of quadricycles on Indian roads, according to a news report by news agency PTI.

The most ambitious projected by Baja Auto to launch its RE60 for which it spent hundreds of crores in R&D.

This could pave way for a safer journey, replacing the auto rickshaws plying in cities in India and many Asia-Pacific countries.

Its benefits are that it sits halfway between three-wheelers and small cars in terms of everything from price to comfort to fuel efficiency to safety.

Unveiled at the recently concluded 2014 Indian Auto Expo at Greater Noida, Bajaj Auto’s RE60 is powered by a water-cooled, 216cc, single-cylinder engine ensconced in a metal-polymer monocoque body. It weighs 400kg, has a turning radius of 3.5 metre and can reach a top speed of 70km per hour.

Apart from the driver it can seat other three passengers and gives a mileage of 35km on a litre of petrol. Bajaj Auto has reportedly spent over Rs.500 crore in developing the platform and has created a capacity to produce 5,000 of the vehicles every month.

Seems that the three wheeled auto-rickshaws will be a thing of the past. Atleast in Mumbai, to begin with.

KISKA HOGA RAJ TILAK?

On a day when Parliament saw unprecedented forms of protests and the use of dangerous substances to disrupt the house, Congress and BJP leaders crossed swords on who was responsible for the washout of sessions. At Panchayat Aaj Tak, the biggest political conclave on General Elections 2014, Congress leader Digvijaya Singh and BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad clashed.

When Digvijaya Singh demanded action against those repeatedly disrupting Parliament, Ravishankar Prasad pointed out that it is the Congress MPs who are not allowing the house to run. The Congress leader said “Today if you ask the people, what happens in Parliament, they will say nothing happens. There’s a trust deficit.”
Prasad shot back, saying that is not the case. “I have been in politics since the JP movement, people know the power of the vote. People can remove the biggest of leaders if they want to. People expect politicians to deliver.”

Moving on to the topic of discussion, ‘Who will be crowned PM”, Prasad attacked the Congress for mocking Narendra Modi’s modest roots, saying it is a matter of pride for the BJP that someone whose father ran a tea stall is candidate for the topmost job in the country. Digvijaya questioned Modi’s development record pointing out that malnourishment in Gujarat is rising andmore than 30 of its officers are in jail on various counts.

Digvijaya Singh said the Congress doesn’t believe in personality-based elections but one based on ideology. He said Congress represents Mahatma Gandhi’s ideals, Nehru’s secularism, decentralization of power and the ideology of social economy.
He also said that BJP stood for strong nationalism, India’s security, concern for the poor and good governance.

While Prasad said face-to-face debates between candidates in race for PM’s post, Digvijaya Singh was less forthcoming but he said debates are important in a democracy.

Now it was Ravishankar Prasad’s turn to hit back at the Congress on secular versus communal politics. He reminded Digvijaya Singh that it was Rajiv Gandhi who bowed before communal elements in the Shah Bano case.

He also took a jibe at the congress leader, saying whenever Digvijaya Singh speaks on controversial issues, it results in more votes for the BJP. Prasad stressed that today’s youth can’t be misled on basis of the old communal-secular divide.

The two leaders also clashed on UPA’s economic achievement. Digvijaya singh hailed Manmohan Singh’s record, stressing that he is a technocrat and not a career politician, and had single-handedly revitalized the economy in the 1990s.

Ravi Shankar Prasad compared Manmohan singh’s achievement vis-à-vis the Vajpayee Govt and said that while the NDA govt provided a healthy growth rate of 8.5%, the present day growth had decelerated to 4.5%.

One interesting aspect of the debate was when Ravi Shankar Prasad was asked about Kejriwal’s impact on Indian politics. The BJP leader attacked Kejriwal, saying there are many politicians who lead a simple life, but none of them flaunts simplicity like Kejriwal does.

Session 2 - Tera Vote Mera Note
Speakers - Rajeev Shukla, Syed Shahnawaz Hussain & Ashutosh, Spokesperson, AAP

BJP: CONGRESS FEARS MODI, SO WE PROJECTED HIM AS PM

BJP’s Muslim face Shahnawaz Hussain  said the singular reason for projecting Narendra Modi as the party’sPM face is because the Congress fears the Gujarat CM the most.

The comment came from the BJP’s Muslim face Shahnawaz Hussain at Panchayat Aaj Tak, the biggest political conclave on General Elections 2014 when Congress’ Rajiv Shukla said “We are neither scared of Narendra Modi nor Ibrahim Lodhi.” The third participant in the discussion “Your Vote, My Note.” AAP’s Ashutosh was the third participant.

The theme of the discussion, naturally, led to a heated debate on corruption, with Rajiv Shukla saying that his party takes swift action on any allegation and that is the reason why the topic is debated in the media. He accused the BJP of remaining silent whenever any of its leader is accused of graft.

The BJP hit back questioning the zero loss theory put forward by Kapil Sibal in the 2G case. Hussain also said there was no action on the Shunglu commission report in the CWG scam.  He also attacked the party on discrediting the CAG report.

The AAP turned the attack on both the national parties. Ashutosh said both parties have their corrupt icons in Yeddyurappa and Virbhadra Singh. AAP pinpointed its attack on Modi, saying a convicted Minister is part of his cabinet, while a BJP MP is in jail for the murder of an RTI activist.

The Aam Aadmi Party defended Delhi’s LawMinister Somnath Bharti, saying no FIR has been lodged against him. However, Ashutosh did admit that there was a problem with Bharti’s attitude.

AAP offered a strange defence of the relief granted to its supporters over pending electricity dues, saying the party doesn’t do politics of caste and communalism.

AAP and Congress clashed on the support granted to the former in the Delhi Vidhan Sabha. Ashutosh mocked congress saying it wrote to the L-G in the dark of the night offering its support. Shukla retorted that there was no alliance between the parties and AAP will have to defend itself on questions of duplicity and performance.

Campaign addresses the need for regular savings to safeguard against future uncertainty

New Delhi, February 13, 2014:
Over the past many years, India has been undergoing a palpable transformation. The Indians of yesterday were steadfast savers as they spent as little as was necessary and saved as much as was possible, all towards ensuring a safe and secure future. In contrast, modern Indians no longer hesitate in spending to enjoy their today but are also conscious to ensure that they are not reckless about the future.

Birla Sun Life Insurance (BSLI), the life insurance arm of the Aditya Birla Financial Services Group through its latest campaign on Savings with Protection Solutions seeks to bring certainty and confidence in customers’ lives in line with the Group’s commitment to empowering mass India to self realize the benefits of financial planning. BSLI’s Savings with Protection Solution offers a bouquet of products that are designed to help consumers achieve the fine balance of maximising today while securing tomorrow. It enables them to save for future needs by setting aside a small amount regularly, allowing them to maintain their current lifestyle as well as to secure the future. This solution offers tax-free savings with life cover.

The TVC on this new solution captures the customers’ desires to live in the present together with the anxiety to secure the future. Life may continue to surprise us with its many uncertainties but if we have smartly planned our finances, money will never have to be the reason for breaking the heart of our loved ones.
Ajay Kakar, Chief Marketing Officer - Financial Services, Aditya Birla Group says, “We live in rapidly changing times where the needs of mass Indians are fast expanding, and so is our spectrum of solutions. Our Savings with Protection Solution enables you to strike the right balance between living comfortably today and staying financially secure in the future, with small disciplined savings at regular intervals.”

He adds, “Through our new TVC we wanted to take this thought to the masses taking inspiration from everyday situations in Indian households.”

Agnello Dias, Chief Creative Officer, Taproot India says, “Life is what happens to you when you’re busy making other plans. That’s the insight this campaign stems from. It tells the audience that you cannot predict what will get in the way of your plans, but you can prepare for it, in a way that lets you enjoy today and secure tomorrow.”

Creative Execution:

Using a slice-of-life story of an everyday Indian couple, the TVC begins with the husband animatedly talking on the phone excited about the first foreign trip the middle-aged couple is planning to undertake post their wedding. In contrast, the wife who has just quit her job is discussing rising unwanted expenditure with her friend on her way home from work. In this emotional dichotomy, the wife overhears the husband’s conversation where he states he isn’t worried of expenses as his wife continues to work and supplement the family income. This is when the wife breaks the news of her quitting the job expecting that her husband will cancel their trip to avoid the unnecessary expenditure. However, he continues to be carefree and still willing to undertake the holiday owing to his practice of steady savings. Through this TVC, the company aims to urge viewers to plan their future through regular small savings in a life full of uncertainties with Birla Sun Life Savings with Protection Solution.

The television commercial (TVC) breaks on-air on February 12, 2014 and the campaign duration is of 5 weeks. The campaign will be present across different mediums including television, radio, and digital, along with ample support from on-ground activation. BSLI will for the first time associate with a cricketing event and engage in content integration on radio to drive the savings message.

This TVC has been worked upon by some very creative minds in the business including Shimit Amin of Chak De India fame as Director and features Swanand Kirkire, award winning lyricist and playback singer as the lead actor.

TERI, Jain Irrigation jointly set up Resource Centre

TERI and Jain Irrigation Systems join hands to set up a Resource Centre on water use efficiency

New Delhi, February, 2014:

The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) in association with Jain Irrigations Systems Limited today signed a memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to set up a ‘Resource Centre on Water Use Efficiency’. This is an effort to address the current and future challenges of water and food security. The MoU marks the beginning of a new chapter in carrying out comprehensive research on the themes of water use efficiency at the farm level, water conservation and regeneration practices along with more efficient farm system practices.

Mr Anil Jain, Managing Director, Jain Irrigation Systems Ltd and
Dr. R. K. Pachauri, Director General, TERI

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. R. K. Pachauri, Director General, TERI, said: “The MoU signing between TERI and Jain Irrigation Systems Ltd. (JISL) is a unique example of a partnership between a business organization like JISL and a knowledge organization like TERI. The world is facing acute problems with growing water stress, limited resources of fossil fuels, malnutrition and hunger. The activities carried out by JISL and TERI will help in bringing about innovation, and assessing institutional solutions and policy options by which those parts of the world which suffer from deficiencies in energy, water and food supply can benefit from this partnership. The signing of the MoU heralds a strong partnership between the two organizations, JISL and TERI.”

Mr Anil Jain, Managing Director, Jain Irrigation Systems Ltd, said: “TERI and JISL are active in a number of common areas such as water systems efficiency, watershed planning and irrigation efficiency. Both institutions believe that through collaboration, they can enhance their efforts in achieving water use efficiency, particularly in the agriculture sector, besides basic research, knowledge exchange and dissemination policy advocacy.”

The High Level Dialogue held during the Delhi Sustainable Development Summit (DSDS) focused on enhancing water use efficiency, keeping in view the challenges associated with sustainable use of natural resources, energy and food security in the developing nations in general, and India in particular. The discussions identified the challenges and opportunities in achieving energy, water and food security and particularly deliberated on regional disparities in crop-water productivity as well as efficiency.

Water, energy and food are inextricably linked and water scarcity would destabilize the balance, the participants said. With increasing complexities of peak demand, inefficient use and added risks due to climate change, the challenge of water availability is set to be the greatest challenge of the 21st century. Water for energy currently amounts to about 8 per cent of global water withdrawals. Food production and supply chain is responsible for around 30 per cent of total global energy demand. Food production is the largest user of water at the global level, responsible for 80–90 per cent of consumptive blue water use. By 2050 -- with 9.2 billion people sharing the planet -- it is expected that there will be a 70 per cent increase in agricultural demand for food and 40 per cent energy increase in demand. Yet by 2030, the world will confront water supply shortage of approximately 40 per cent.

Sustainable management of water resources in agriculture and all other sectors requires a multidisciplinary approach that incorporates many disciplines of study to move towards more efficient management and use of water. In general, a comprehensive approach to resolving the inefficiencies of water use and the institutional reform processes that will govern them require inputs from policymakers, scientists, engineers, farmers and civil society institutions, the participants said. The high level dialogue enabled the forging of a platform to take the discussions forward.
