The first-of-its-kind an international 24x7 helpline for patients suffering from pancreatic diseases was launched at the 10th International Advanced Therapeutic Endoscopy Symposium in Mumbai

MUMBAI, January 18: The 10th International Advanced Therapeutic Endoscopy Symposium begun on Saturday (18th January) here at Hotel Palladium to present a comprehensive overview of the rapidly changing EUS landscape. The first-of-its-kind an international 24x7 helpline for patients suffering from pancreatic diseases was launched during the two-day symposium.

The 24x7 helpline will help create awareness about the most neglected and vital organ of human body, the pancreas. The second semester of the first ever ‘Global MBA Programme’ launched in partnership by three leading management institutions in the world- XLRI, Jamshedpur- IndiaWeatherhead School of Management of Case Western University, Cleveland- USA and School of Economics & Management of Tongji University, Shanghai- China commences at XLRI- Xavier School of Management.

Mr. H.M. Nerurkar, MD- Tata Steel and Chairman, XLRI’s Board of Governors, inaugurates Indian leg of the program in the institute’s newly constructed state-of-the-art International Center. The event was attended by the pioneering class of 47 students from five countries- India, China, USA, Belgium and Iran in presence of Fr. E Abraham, S. J.Director of XLRI, DrJittu Singh, Chairman of International Relations at XLRI and Director of the Global MBAprogram and other dignitaries.

Prior to this, the cohort of students started the first semester of the programme in Shanghai, China in August, 2013 and after the completion of the second semester in India in April, 2014 they will be travelling to Case Western University,Cleveland, USA for the third semester. Thereafter, students will return to their respective ‘home schools’ for their final semester to complete courses in line with their local graduation requirements.

Welcoming the students and guests on the occasion, Dr. Jittu Singh, Chairman of International Relations and Director of the Global MBA program, pointed out in his introductory address that the Global MBA program was conceived with multiple objectives in mind. Apart from developing proficiency in the functional disciplines of management, it aims to develop a new breed of executives well versed in different cultures, and capable of being effective anywhere. It also seeks to build bridges of understanding to connect India, China and USA—three of the most important countries in today’s world.

In his inaugural address, Mr. Nerurkar pointed out that the business world is rapidly becoming borderless. Products may be manufactured in one country for markets in another country or continent; and the talent required for related activities may be sourced from several nations. Under these circumstances, it is essential that corporate executives develop a broader global mindset than in yesteryears when businesses tended to be localized. He too emphasized the need for firms to go beyond profit-making to identify themselves with, and enrich, the communities in which they operate.

Fr. E. Abraham, Director of XLRI, spoke with justifiable pride about the huge investments the institute has made in upgrading and expanding its infrastructure for its various ongoing as well as the Global MBA programs. He cited the new International Center as an example. Added to it soon will be a new Learning Center with state-of-the-art classrooms, and a new residence to accommodate 400 students. He also highlighted the Jesuit mission to develop socially conscious citizens.

The distinctive feature of the program is the opportunity it provides to students of different nationalities to live together, study together, travel together, and play together—and learn from the best that each of the three schools has to offer. In addition to the functional disciplines of management, they are expected to gain first-hand experience of organizational life in each country through internships in local companies.

On successful completion of the MBA program, students of each nationality group will receive the degree of their ‘home school’ along with a certificate awarded jointly by the three partners. Interested students can also acquire a formal degree or diploma from any one of the foreign schools by completing some additional courses in the respective schools.

Women in Film & Television (India) (WIFT), in association with U.S. Consulate General Mumbai, will conduct a panel discussion on ‘The Art of Capturing Reality- Documentary’.  

Participating will be Debra Zimmerman, a U.S. film expert and Executive Director of the non-profit group Women Make Movies; PatrickShen, a multiple award-winning U.S. filmmaker; filmmaker Shivendra Singh (Celluloid Man); and Surabhi Sharma (Bidesia in Bambai).  The discussion took place on 17th January, 2014 evening at St. Andrew’s College.

Anjali Monteiro (Professor and Dean, School of Media and Cultural Studies, Tata Institute of Social Sciences) moderated the event.

Debra Zimmerman has moderated panels and taught master classes on documentary films at the Sundance Film Festival, MIPDOC, Reel Screen, and international film festivals throughout Europe, Africa, Asia, and South America. Patrick Shen’s feature length debut, Flight from Death, received seven “Best Documentary” awards at film festivals across the U.S. and has screened all over the world. FilmmakerShivendra Singh has been selected for this year's Bimal Roy Memorial Emerging Talent Award for his widely appreciated documentary Celluloid Man.

Sandip Soparrkar wins Family No. 1 Reality Game Show on DD National

The two Gurus opened the show with the 90 second game battle in the first segment ‘Ek Se Badhkar Ek,’ followed by the two contestants from each team fighting it out in round two ‘Do Do Haath.’ The battle was not over yet, the next round ‘Hum Saat Saat Hain’ had all the members of the Rum Jhum Family get to the floor with a ball game. ‘Aakhri Daav’ round which is the final decision making round on the show followed, where Sandeep Mahavir and Sandip Soparrkar showed off their childhood skill of bursting balloons by sitting on them. The show was hilarious and complete entertainer till the end with Sandip Soparrkar and his Non Indian team family winning the Family No.1 title.

Cathay places order for 21 Boeing 777-9X

CATHAY PACIFIC PLACES ORDER FOR 21 BOEING 777-9X AIRCRAFT,
DELIVERIES TO COMMENCE IN 2021


Cathay Pacific Airways today announced its latest investment as part of the airline’s fleet modernisation programme – the purchase of 21 Boeing 777-9X aircraft from The Boeing Company. The new airplanes, which have a list price of about HK$58 billion, are scheduled to be delivered between 2021 and 2024.

The 777X is Boeing’s newest family of wide-body airplanes that builds on the 777-300ER that is already deployed extensively around the Cathay Pacific network. The 777-9X is a larger twin-engine jet that will have both a larger payload than other twin-engine aircraft and reduced fuel consumption and lower operating costs.

The 777-9X is designed to seat approximately 400 passengers, but this will vary according to each airline’s configuration preferences. The new aircraft’s operating range of 8,200 nautical miles (15,185 km) makes it particularly well suited for Cathay Pacific’s ultra-long-haul network.

Cathay Pacific Chief Executive John Slosar said: “Cathay Pacific is committed to modernising its fleet to provide a superior experience to passengers while at the same time as delivering cost benefits to the airline and reducing our impact on the environment. The 777-300ER has done a superb job for us – indeed, Cathay Pacific is now the second largest operator of this type – and we are delighted to be an early customer for this next generation of the aircraft. 

“The 777-9X promises us improved payload range capability and reduced operating costs, in addition to a significant reduction in environmental emissions. We think it will be an ideal fit for long-haul destinations in North America and Europe, in particular those routes where we carry high volumes of passengers and cargo each day.”

The 777X family of aircraft will be the largest and most-efficient twin-engine jet in the world, with up to 20% lower fuel consumption than the 777s. State-of-the-art wing and propulsion technology make the 777X significantly quieter than previous-generation airplanes and will help to make it one of the quietest aircraft in its class. The reduced noise signature of the aircraft will allow operators to reduce noise exposure for the nearby community.

The addition of this latest order of 21 Boeing 777-9X aircraft increases Cathay Pacific's order book to 89 aircraft from 2014 to 2024, at an aggregate current list price of approximately HK$215 billion.




As at the end of December this year, there will be 140 aircraft in the Cathay Pacific fleet. From 2014, the airline is set to take delivery of another 12 Boeing 777-300ERs, meaning it will have a total of 50 of this aircraft type in its fleet by 2020. Other aircraft on order include eight Airbus A330-300s, 22 Airbus A350-900s and 26 Airbus A350-1000s.

“The huge investment we are making in new aircraft underscores our confidence in the future of the Cathay Pacific Group as well as our commitment to maintaining Hong Kong’s position as one of the world’s great aviation hubs,” Mr Slosar said.

The 777X family of aircraft will employ advanced technologies to drive efficiency and environmental performance. The 777-9X will be powered by the new GE9X engine which, according to GE, is 10% more fuel efficient than GE90-115B that powers other Boeing 777 aircraft. Other features of the aircraft include a folding, raked wingtip and optimised span that will deliver greater efficiency and significant fuel savings.
